Develop-alooza on Spencer

I don’t usually walk down Spencer Street, but I decided to wander over there a few days ago. The very first time I visited this area, I was going to an open house at The Spencer. I always liked this street (and especially the block between Willoughby and Dekalb) because it is very quiet and tucked away from the main drag. I don’t remember what was at the end of the block, at the corner of Spencer and Willoughby, but when I was walking through I was taken aback by a development that I hadn’t heard anything about. On both of the southern corners of Spencer and Willoughby something is being built.

This is obviously an apartment building waiting to be born. My guess that they will be condos, but my search on the DOB website didn’t return anything very interesting. Of course, my DOB website search skills are not quite as sharp as they could be.

I squeezed my lens between two pieces of construction site gate to get this pic. I wonder what the future holds for this corner. The DOB paperwork stapled to the construction site gate read “warehouse” (I think).  I find it hard to believe that someone would build any sort of warehouse here. I was hoping it was going to say “Class A grocery store”, although I know that isn’t DOB terminology. If you’re interested, the address is 192 Spencer for the large building and the corner lots’ addresses range from 178 (?)-190 Spencer. Â

I have heard that the new construction on Spencer and Willoughby is a Senior Citizens’ Home. I was told that by a resident of The Spencer who out of curiosity simply asked the construction men at work on the site.

Thanks for the info Carmen. It’s nice to know that they are building housing for our elderly neighbors.

There used to be a garage/repair shop on that corner. When I first moved to this area that was a very quiet street now its Development central! At least six to ten new projects have been built around there.

I still cannot get used to change occurring so quickly. Even though I’m still new to the neighborhood, I’ve seen the opening of The Spencer buildings, The Home Depot and now a senior citizens’ home in that specific area.

What has ever happened to the Spencer? Did they get their C of O? Are people happy there? Funny you never see any of those units for sale.

I noticed that one of the Spencer buildings is still unoccupied. I hope that things straighten out quickly, and I feel for those people who had to wait so long to get a C of O. I almost bought a place at the Spencer, so I could’ve been in the same boat.

[...] back I photographed this building on Spencer street and it seemed like just another new building in the neighborhood. [...]
