Even though they have been open less than two months, the Tompkins Avenue coffee shop/cafe Common Grounds has received nothing but rave reviews from their customers. I stopped by this week to see it for myself.
The minute I stepped into the place, it was easy to understand why this coffee shop has been getting a lot of attention. The warm colors on the walls and the cool seating area drew me inside, and the friendly atmosphere and excellent service will bring me back again and again. The food was delicious. I had the mozzarella, tomato and basil panini with baby carrots on the side, and I finished it off with a slice of lemon cake.Â
The owner Tremaine was working behind the counter, and she talked with me about the changes occurring in the neighborhood. Like many other young entrepreneurs in the area, she is from Bedford-Stuyvesant and lives near her business. It’s great to see individuals create much-needed businesses in their own neighborhoods.
If you haven’t gotten the chance to visit this wonderful place, make a plan to get there immediately. (And try a slice of that red velvet cake!) We welcome Common Grounds to the neighborhood.
Tremaine and Malcolm give Common Grounds a warm, friendly atmosphere.Â

I can’t wait to go!
Changling, I gather you like Common Grounds? You should have gone to the next block south and you’ll see boutiques, antique stores a restaurant and the great Ibo Landing on the hottest block in Bed Stuy.
Horray! good stuff in the hood…
Question- I live in Lafayette at Bedford, and I feel like there’s barely anything going on up here- I’m stuck in limbo right on the bedstuy/clintonhill line and stuck with crappy bodegas and chinese places- anything decent around here? I know about the two African places on Bedford (gonna check them out!) but what’s going on on Nostrand? Anything?!
Oh Leo, you are absolutely right. Ibo Landing is the best. The best, Leo. The best! I’m thinking about purchasing a piece of furniture that would fit nicely in my bedroom. I picked up some scented candles there yesterday. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post!
Carmen, I think Nostrand and Lafayette is an emerging area. Beyond the soon-to-open Dunkin’ Donuts, I can’t think of anything new opening on that corner. I do think that the DD is a harbinger of things to come, though. Electricgreek tipped me off on a new place opening a block east on Marcy and Pulaski. He thinks it might be an eatery of some sort, but when I peeped in I couldn’t tell. I think we’ll have to wait a few more days and see.
Carmen, go to Franklin bet. Greene and Lexington and you’ll find Heavenly Crumbs and on Bedford there is Le Toukouleur. Have brunch at Common Grounds on Tompkins or BushBaby on Fulton off of Bedford.
Changeling my name is Nikima Frenche I am the owner of Le Chateau de Frenche Day Spa and Private Tea Room, I am also on Tompkins Ave (441 between Halsey and Macon Street. Nikima, you don’t have to ask me twice!!! I’m definitely in need of a spa day. I’ll be visiting you very soon!
My son and I adore Common Ground! We are regulars who are almost addicted to those yummy waffles being served everyday. I also live, and have a business in the area so it is a wonderful addition!
Don’t forget to do an entry on the spa when you go!!! Also check out my friend Cleon’s boutique Debonaire across from Ibo’s Landing!
Will do, Simone. And I absolutely LOVE Cleon’s boutique, Debonaire!
Good Day Everyone. Its Malcolm, one of the staffers here at Common Grounds. I’d like to thank everyone for coming out and showing CG some support and love. I see a lot of customers who are coming because of what they read here and on other blogs. So once again thank you all. I hope to see you soon, you can try one of our Frozen Smoothies or Frosted Latte drinks and chill out with me. Also remember Common Grounds is a Wi-FI hotspot.

Big tings ah gwaan inna bed-stuy! First, i want to say how much i’ve appreciated Common Ground in my neighborhood. I’m always there for their awesome coffee at an awesome size and awesome price. I live on Tompkins, and so whenever i’m going about my business, this little cafe manages to lure me in.
