Finding Common Grounds

dsc00170.JPG

Even though they have been open less than two months, the Tompkins Avenue coffee shop/cafe Common Grounds has received nothing but rave reviews from their customers. I stopped by this week to see it for myself.

The minute I stepped into the place, it was easy to understand why this coffee shop has been getting a lot of attention. The warm colors on the walls and the cool seating area drew me inside, and the friendly atmosphere and excellent service will bring me back again and again. The food was delicious. I had the mozzarella, tomato and basil panini with baby carrots on the side, and I finished it off with a slice of lemon cake.Â

The owner Tremaine was working behind the counter, and she talked with me about the changes occurring in the neighborhood. Like many other young entrepreneurs in the area, she is from Bedford-Stuyvesant and lives near her business. It’s great to see individuals create much-needed businesses in their own neighborhoods.

If you haven’t gotten the chance to visit this wonderful place, make a plan to get there immediately. (And try a slice of that red velvet cake!) We welcome Common Grounds to the neighborhood.

    I can’t wait to go!

Changling, I gather you like Common Grounds? You should have gone to the next block south and you’ll see boutiques, antique stores a restaurant and the great Ibo Landing on the hottest block in Bed Stuy.

  3. Carmen says:

Horray! good stuff in the hood…
Question- I live in Lafayette at Bedford, and I feel like there’s barely anything going on up here- I’m stuck in limbo right on the bedstuy/clintonhill line and stuck with crappy bodegas and chinese places- anything decent around here? I know about the two African places on Bedford (gonna check them out!) but what’s going on on Nostrand? Anything?!

  4. The Changeling says:

Oh Leo, you are absolutely right. Ibo Landing is the best. The best, Leo. The best! I’m thinking about purchasing a piece of furniture that would fit nicely in my bedroom. I picked up some scented candles there yesterday. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post!

Carmen, I think Nostrand and Lafayette is an emerging area. Beyond the soon-to-open Dunkin’ Donuts, I can’t think of anything new opening on that corner. I do think that the DD is a harbinger of things to come, though. Electricgreek tipped me off on a new place opening a block east on Marcy and Pulaski. He thinks it might be an eatery of some sort, but when I peeped in I couldn’t tell. I think we’ll have to wait a few more days and see.

  5. Leo says:

Carmen, go to Franklin bet. Greene and Lexington and you’ll find Heavenly Crumbs and on Bedford there is Le Toukouleur. Have brunch at Common Grounds on Tompkins or BushBaby on Fulton off of Bedford.
