On Saturday, April 7th, Tompkins Park saw a lot of activity! First, the Bed-Stuy Little League held their Player Evaluation Day trials. Also, the annual Easter Egg Hunt was held at the park, as well as the Farmers’ Market.

It was a chilly day on Saturday, but that didn’t deter any of the participants from the fun and activities at Tompkins Park.

we are moving to bed stuy in a few weeks, and i’m wondering what the general vibe is in that park. safe? friendly? we have young children and are hoping that it will be a place to enjoy when the weather gets warm.
You know, I’ve only been in this park in the daytime, but I’ve always thought of it as safe. I’ve never noticed anything to make me think otherwise.
I come to this park all the time–walk my dogs, run the ampitheatre steps, cut across to go to the community garden. i feel safe in the park, and i have to say that with very, very fex exceptions I feel safe walking around all of bed-stuy, even late at night. people say hello to me, we excahnge greetings, they pet my dogs. I hope you will enjoy the park adn the neighborhood in the spring and leave the place a bit better than you found it.

Can anyone tell me a bit more about the farmer’s market — Is it every Saturday? What are the hours? What is sold there? Thanks in advance!
I tried to Google the Tompkins Farmers Market to find out more, but nothing came up. Hopefully some other readers who have visited this market can give us more details on it.
On behalf of my brother,a HUGE thank you to all of the supporters of his Little League. It has always been and will always continue to be: ALL ABOUT THE KIDS!! Last year I was asked to host the Awards Ceremony Dinner and I was completely blown away by the love, dedication, time and money(his own), that my brother put into making EVERY kid feel like a winner. His slogan is appropriate: Nobody WIns, Unless Everybody WIns!”. On a personal note: Mike has been involved with baseball since we were mere tots(we are only 11 months apart in age) and it is only natural for him to correlate the two loves of his life: children and baseball.
Hope to see You Opening Day!
Remember the slogan: “Nobody Wins, Unless Everybody Wins”.
Hi Maree’! Thanks for reading! And thank you Michael Harris for allowing me to use up a portion of his day for the interview. On a comment from the original Post, a reader wanted to know about the use of the term “inner city” and its potential to steer away more affluent residents. I didn’t want to respond on anyone’s behalf, but could understand how the name would have been originally selected. Can you comment?
My pleasure.
By the by- I am his sister( the older, good-looking half-lol)
My brother and I spoke this morning about your awesome blog. He will give his thoughts behind why he named this League: Inner City Sports when he gets a moment. He is excited and of course,as busy as ever preparing for Opening Day. Thank you again for your column and enjoy today!
Hi Maree’! What was I thinking? Maree’ doesn’t sound like a masculine name. I’ll correct on my previous comment ASAP! I will be around on the 21st to take some more photos of opening day, and hopefully I can make your and your brother’s acquaintance.
