Habitat Homes in Bed Stuy

By Zengine | May 15, 2007

In The Changeling’s last comment of the previous post, Women Build 2007: Building Affordable Homes on Halsey and Marcus Garvey, I researched Habitat for Humanity’s other Bed-Stuy projects. Habitat for Humanity started building homes in Bed-Stuy in 2000, spearheaded by Jimmy Carter. I found a few photos of existing Habitat homes, and thought The Changeling could comment on the aesthetics:

Willoughby Avenue and Marcus Garvey Boulevard

Hart Street

The Hart Street ones look fantastic! I thought they were renovations at first!

Hey! These are nice! What do I have to do to get a Habitat home? I would certainly help build my home if I knew it would come out looking like this.

i don’t mind the top set either, but yes, the Hart St houses should be the model around these parts. why is it so rare? these houses were completed in 2000, it’s like people didn’t realize they could build ugly houses until 2003 or so.

    My 2¢:

The Hart St ones aren’t that bad EXCEPT:

Why are they always putting the electrical meters on the front of the buildings? It’s not necessary and it’s an eyesore.

And wooden front porch steps & awnings would look a lot nicer than the concrete ones and the prefab green awnings. It wouldn’t be any more expensive for steps that size and would allow for more variation in the individual design, color, etc.

And window bars are always ugly. Without exception. And unnecessary - they don’t require them in most other similar postindustrial cities (ie: Chicago, Philly, etc.).
