’Tis the Season for Live Music
By The Changeling | May 28, 2007
I love live music, but I only seem to get to shows when the weather is warm. If my friends tell me that they will be playing a show anytime between October and April, I usually wish them well and say, “Let me know how that goes.” But once the temperatures start to rise and the days grow longer, I’m all about the live shows!
When I found out that my favorite Brooklyn bands from Kentucky would be playing gigs in our neighborhood this weekend, I knew that the official start of the Summer Live Music Season was upon us. Joshua Hawksley and East 146, musicians who happen to live in the neighborhood, played an all ages show here on Saturday. Several other bands were scheduled to play including Stab the Matador, Hummingbirds, Someday Never and Anamanaguchi, and although I was less familiar with them, the music I heard was great and the crowd was lively and responsive.
Joshua Hawksley, the former frontman for the band From Within, rocked the crowd with an acoustic set. His powerful vocals were friggin’ amazing and his songwriting talent is impressive. His current project is called Rose Island and you can check out some of his music by visiting his Myspace page by clicking here.
When East 146 took the stage their infectious energy was truly awesome. Lead singer Chris Stahl has a magnetic personality that he exudes when he’s onstage. When you describe a music artist to someone, you often end up trying to think of another artist that they sound like so that you can draw a comparison. Whenever I hear East 146’s music I am reminded of some of the altrock stars that I used to listen to when I was younger (think MTV’s 120 Minutes). East 146 mentions on their website that Foo Fighters and Goo Goo Dolls are some of their influences, and you can definitely hear it in their music, but what they’ve done is taken the old alternative formula and reinterpreted it for modern audiences. East 146 is serious talent. Check out their music here and here.
All of these musicians are brilliant, so I urge you to get out and see them at their next show. As soon as I find out where these bands are playing next, I’ll post the information on the blog. East 146’s next gig is in Louisville, KY, but hopefully they’ll be playing another show in the tri-hood (East Williamsburg, Bushwick and/or Bed-Stuy) soon.
Are there any other live music shows coming up in the neighborhood?

Oops, I forgot to mention that. It was a basement show at Myrtle Gardens between Marcy and Tompkins. There are a bunch of musicians living around there.
