Boys’ High School of Bedford-Stuyvesant

To allow your weary eyes a break from the hideous architecture of the past couple of days, I thought I would proffer for your approval these images of the beauteous Boys’ High School located at 832 Marcy Avenue between Putnam Avenue and Madison Street. This landmarked building was constructed 110 years ago, and it was designed by an Irish architect by the name of James Naughton. The style of Boys’ High School is Romanesque revival. Naugton also designed a building in the Cobble Hill historic district (334 Clinton Street) that I haven’t had the chance to see yet. I wonder if it is as beautifully ornate as this one.

I was surprised to find out that famous authors Norman Mailer and Isaac Asimov attended school here.

For some amazing pictures of this building please check out the NYC Architecture website and the Columbia Teachers College website.

  1. Wow, that’s gorgeous. I’ve only see stuff like that in a few Park Slope buildings.

Do you know what the original purpose of the building was? Was it originally designed to be a school?

This is definitely my favorite building. It is gorgeous and so well maintained. This building was originally built as a school in 1891-92 and designed by James W. Naughton.
