Bed-Stuy has its share of ugly residential buildings that look completely out of place on their blocks. But this neighborhood also has several examples of decent looking buildings that accomplish the same evil deed–messing up the block with architecture that just doesn’t fit.
With all of the scaffolding up it may not be apparent, but this really isn’t a bad looking building. It’s located on Bedford south of Myrtle. The problem is that it clashes with those around it, and it doesn’t have a common setback with the neighboring buildings.
Here’s a nice looking building on Monroe just west of Nostrand:
Now let’s look at it alongside its neighbors:
This is the architectural equivalent of the city mouse meeting the country mouse, or country mice in this case. Can you imagine living in this modern condo and looking out of your window to see these quaint little houses on either side? Or looking out of your frame home to see this cold, narrow, silver and brick building? Mix-n-match architecture is running rampant in The Stuy.

I’m actually looking to buy in the hood…and, sadly, I’d like to have something new and under a warranty of some kind. Any rumors about how much something like this would go for?
flame away…
Not to be mean to the cute little old houses, but they are a bit archaic in a city as big as NY these days. Pretty inefficient and so, I’m afraid, endangered.
Corcoran is selling these. According to their website the 1 bd/1 ba units (660 sq ft) range from 339-349K, the 2 bd/1 ba units (710 sq ft) are around 450K and there is a large 1200 sq ft 1 bath unit being offered for 499K. The nice thing about these condos is that they are on the same block as the new Bed-Stuy Y. You can check them out in person this Sunday. There is an open house from noon-1:30 p.m.
The Building on Monroe is actually nice, i’ve seen the units and they are nice too, the nicest i’m sure is sold but it was the top floor Rear! Wow! and The 1st floor rear unit has a very nice outdoor space… go for it! and regarding Context – FOR EVERY AGE IT’S ART!
