Bed-Stuy, You Rule Do-Over

Wednesday there was a heated discussion on Brownstoner’s blog about the appropriateness of the new Virgin Mobile phone ads (Bed-Stuy, You Rule.) In case you haven’t gotten a chance to join in the fracas, you can do so here.
In response to the discussion Jayne Wallace of Virgin Mobile USA has presented Bed-Stuy residents as well as other Brooklynites with a challenge. Since so many people seemed to dislike the ads, she is inviting Brooklyn residents to come up with our own Bed-Stuy ad in the same “Bed-Stuy, You Rule” format. Anybody up for the challenge? If so, post your best revamped ad over at Brownstoner.

the invitation to enter a contest to “write your own copy” is the oldest, cheapest trick in the book by creative directors and agencies to get good work for free or close to it. (i know, because i am a cd) i agree that the ads should come down and be replaced (practically anything would be better) but any smart, creative person in this day and age will contact thier lawyer and negotiate some rather large fees for an ad campaign of this scale. i am so disgusted by the ads on every level-virgin has lost all credibility in my book.

Yep, the first thing I thought in response to Wallace’s invitation was “Will we get paid? A lot?”

I made my voice loud and clear on brownstoner (BTW changling, i wanted to email you about it to post here but there is no email on this blog).
I had a VERY interesting dialogue with the Chief Creative Officer at that shop… The CD on that bed stuy campaign’s girl friend is from here (they are in NC). But as we know being from here does not a Brooklynite make.
