Bed-Stuy Clean-Up Update

By The Changeling | June 11, 2007

Recently we decided that we would, in response to being named the dirtiest neighborhood in NYC, organize neighborhood-wide clean-up days. We settled on this Saturday, June 16th as the date of the first event.Â

Hopefully over the past several days everyone who was interested in participating has convinced their friends and neighbors to join them in cleaning up their block. Even if you have only 2-5 people cleaning up a block, the process should be quick and easy. Clean-up crews should focus on removing things like wrappers, bodega bags, straws, cigarette boxes, etc.Â

I’ve put together a simple flyer for you to post, if you need it.Â

In the comments section below, please let me know which blocks are being represented. I’d like to put this information in the post that I’m going to place on Brooklynian.   I’m going to try to tackle the block on Myrtle east of Marcy.

Great! I was afraid I was going to be the only one picking up trash on Saturday… :)

I gave a copy of the form you created to members of the Bed Stuy business Alliance and I am hoping that people that have access to a hose and bleach can take the clean up to the next level. Please support area resturants for Father’s Day!

I hope someone can start with that sidewalk mess of a donation on the corner of Malcolm X and Macon St. Unfortunately, I think it calls for action from the proper Sanitation authorities. Perhaps with enough complaint from concerned citizens who read this blog we can get rid of this eye-sore in our community.

Thanks for passing this information along to the BS Business Alliance. I will make sure that I continue to support those businesses.

I didn’t know about the mess on Malcolm X and Macon. A call to 311 hasn’t brought any action?

What if you just want to join others and help them clean their block rather than organize your own? I am a future Bed Stuy resident but still live in Clinton Hill. Is there a list of streets currently participating?

Hi Newbedstuy! Not every block will be involved (that’s a goal we can shoot for in the future), so you are welcome to join others clean up their blocks. As of now the only residential blocks that I know are participating are

    Monroe between Tompkins and Throop
    Myrtle between Marcy and Tompkins

This is a great way to meet some of your future neighbors.

I will be out on Putnam between Marcus Garvey and Throop…

We represent residents, homeowners, business owners and anyone interested and dedicated to the happenings in Bed Stuy. Caught between Clinton Hill and Bushwick, south of Williamsburg, but north of Restoration Plaza, we were starved for some local focus and decided it was time to do it ourselves! Thanks for reading.
