New Bike Racks at the Bed-Stuy Y

By The Changeling | June 29, 2007

The Bed-Stuy Y is the gift that keeps on giving. Behold the new bike racks installed around the building. There are three bike racks on the Monroe Street side and one bike rack on the Bedford Avenue side. Now we can bike over to the gym and get ourselves into shape. Thanks, Bed-Stuy Y!

***Breaking news! The center just added 8 new treadmills and 9 new elliptical trainers to the fitness room. They now have more treads and ellipticals than my former higher priced gym in Williamsburg. The Bed-Stuy YMCA is truly a slice of heaven on earth.

How is this YMCA? It looks nice. what are the fees, and does everyone enjoy going to it? Clean?

    Just got back from there!
    Pros:
    - It is wonderful having this so close
    - I think the staff is taking good care of the physical plant.
    - People using the facility follow the rules and are respectful.
    Cons:
    - It can get a bit tight in there when the adjoining high school is present for phys ed.
    - I find that many (not all) all of the staff require a bit more training in the area of “people skills”. They are not rude, just not skilled in how to deal with unexpected situations.
-They need to sharpen some of the Administrative systems.
    - Sometimes info provided by staff w/regard to schedules and policies are not always correct and while I understand the rational, some of the policies are annoying for parents

All that said the Director is very accessible by phone, patient and receptive.

One great thing about summer is that the phys ed classes are no longer in session so weekdays are not nearly as crowded.

I’m glad that my enthusiasm is infectious! I have to say that I was very happy about these bike racks because I put a note in the suggestion box at the YMCA’s front desk telling them that people like to ride their bikes to the gym and that bike racks are a must. Two weeks later BOOM BOOM and the bike racks appear! When have you EVER had that happen to you in NYC? Make a suggestion and someone follows it? Like, never!

Now, I’m sure the addition of these bike racks to the center was already in the pipeline, and I just happened to make the suggestion just before they were installed. Nevertheless, the appearance that my suggestion was taken seriously is enough to make me happy. :)

And anon, I forgot to mention that the monthly fees are cheap and the facility is completely new. I think the monthly fees are between $20-$30 for adults. Check out my previous post about the Bedford Y:

You can visit it at anytime and ask someone to give you a tour and talk to you about the services offered there. The hours are Mon - Fri 6 am - 10:30 pm and Sat/Sun 8 am - 8 pm.

I think the new Y addition is a great improvement for the neighborhood. Now I only wish they would plant some trees along the corner of Bedford and Monroe - isn’t that a requirement by Code?

I had no idea that the YMCA was so new. so reasonably priced and so close. I’m going to have to check it out and get off my couch.

    Thanks for the tip!

I think it would be great if they planted some trees along the sidewalk. I’m not sure if it is a requirement, but you could always put a suggestion in the suggestion box.

The Y is not new. It just has an added wing.

Well, they added a wing and renovated the old one. So everything is…new.
