This s a beeautiful building that I will soon see everyday. The old churches are what really help attract me to this neigborhood.
When I was in grade school, we learned that Brooklyn is the boro of curches; and indeed it is!
was this previously a synagogue? that window looks like a bricked-over star of David but the design of the building seems very churchy.
I googled the name of this church and I couldn’t find anything. The star of David on the front is what caught my eye in the first place.
Established in 1868, the present Our Lady of Victory Church was dedicated on October 20, 1895, by Bishop Charles E. McDonnell amid much pomp and fanfare.

An article from the Brooklyn Eagle dated 1893 heralds the Church as one of the most beautiful Catholic Churchs erected in the city (Brooklyn was still it’s own city then)

Hey Newbedstuy, thanks for the links!
Victory is one of the most beautiful churches in the borough of churches, and the inside is every bit as charming as the outside. Fact is that the interior is even more lovely than it was several decades ago. It seems the diocese over the past 20 years or so did work on it. The one sad thing for oldtimers is the silence around the back area which used to house the grammar school and the convent, and which gave a special touch of character to a neighborhood that had much character to begin with. I attended the grammar school. Let’s just say it was a few years ago.
Thanks for the history, Ron.
