558 Lafayette: What Gives?

A few days ago I came upon 558 Lafayette. It’s located just west of the Bedford-Nostrand G train station and overall it’s nice looking building. I’m glad that it was built here. Back in May 2006 Brownstoner did a post on this building, and at the time the building looked to be nearly move-in ready. Jump cut to one year later and you will see that this building is still unoccupied and it has lost two trees to boot. According to one commenter on the Brownstoner site, by May 2006 the building had been sitting vacant for nearly year. If this is true then the building has now been empty for two years. What’s up with the glacial pace of progress at this development?

I was actually going to post here about this! I want to see one of those units- its on my block really close to my current apt and I’m interested in purchasing something in the hood- these places look really nice! I might call the builder (which is the only number on the building…)

Usually when a building sits empty for so long, there’s a finance issue or a DoB violations problem.

According to the DOB database, there is an open ECB violation–the plumber didn’t secure a open trench–but the fine was $1000 which doesn’t seem like enough to stop construction. But looking back a few years, I see that some stop work orders were issued due to lack of a construction permit (starting in 1998) so maybe it’s a combo of finance and building issues.

I also see a new work permit was issued as of 7/2 to install boilers.

I’m not so good at interpreting the cryptic info supplied by the DOB, but if anyone with more expertise cares to look into this further, the BIN is 3848187, Block: 1788 Lot: 40.

Good luck finding info on this!!! A year ago or more I tried to walk in and ask questions and was greeted by two HUGE (sleeping) rotweilers. I tippy toed backwards and never returned. My phone calls went unanswered so I gave up :-(

What happened to the trees that were there in the brownstoner post?

So I was walking home from Tiny Cup a few hours ago and saw a hispanic guy coming out of the building. I tried to ask him if any were for sale or if they were renting them or how I could contact the realtor and he just kept saying “they no finish, they no finish” over and over.

I don’t think he understood what I was asking. DOH

BUT that means someone is at least IN there…he had keys and the door on the first floor was open- there’s paint and stuff inside

The plot thickens! Maybe the next time you can squeeze a little more information out of him. I’m not sure what happened to the trees. The picture above was taken about a week or so ago and the Brownstoner pic was obviously taken months before mine. My guess is that once they realized that the move-in date would be moved forward, they probably uprooted those trees and moved them to another project that they were working on that was nearing completion.

Call 212-462-2929 to inquire about this building and to see the apartments. The prices are fantastic. We are the Rental Agents on this building.
