Lewis Ave. Flea Market, pt. 2

By Alexa11221 | July 26, 2007

Now for the second part of my visit to the Lewis Avenue Flea Market!

The market is located on the corner of Lewis and Decatur, wrapping around the schoolyard. It’s open every Saturday, 9 am - 5 pm, from May through October 27. Vendors donate part of their proceeds to benefit a local teen program and the PTA at the Stephen Decatur School (MS 35).

According to a flyer I got from one of the managers, they welcome new vendors. Just stop by on a Saturday and speak with Veronica, Suhaylah, Michele, Yvette or Celeste (the five managers) if you’re interested in participating. This is the sixth year the market has been there.

West of Mrs Miller’s stand, I found a table filled with yummy-looking lotions, potions and soaps, manned by Kasey of the Lord & Whisper skin care spa. She was offering on-the-spot facials for $25, which seems like a real bargain. She let me try a sample of lavender and basil sugar scrub, which made my hands feel super smooth and smell delicious. I bought a purse-size bottle of grapefruit and mint lotion on the spot! She also offers shower gels, soy candles and men’s soaps. All of her products are available in a range of scents; she mentioned, among others, apple, cress, mango, huckleberry, red currant and thyme, cherry vanilla, brown sugar/fig and citrus/basil, as well as floral and musk fragrances. For more information on the spa and its services, check the web site, www.whisperskincare.com. You can email Kasey at whisperskincare@aol.com or call 718/623 2100. Lord & Whisper is on Putnam Ave between Stuyvesant and Lewis.

I didn’t get this lady’s name but did manage to snap her and her items. As you can see, she’s got a mélange of earrings, vintage clothing and other items, and what looks like greeting cards. Classic flea market fare and well worth a browse!

The final table to the west along Decatur St belonged to Veronica Nero, one of the market’s five managers. Her stand was filled with an interesting mix of pottery, glassware, and architectural bits and pieces, including a vintage faucet and a section of pressed-tin frieze (sorry, it’s not in the photo). I think Veronica has a fantastic eye for intriguing items. I definitely want to go back and take a second look!

While the items available obviously will vary from week to week, and the market itself is rather small, in combination with the adjacent farmers market and the shops and restaurants across Lewis Avenue (Bread Stuy, Petite Bassam, Brownstone Books) the intersection of Lewis and Decatur makes for a worthwhile Saturday destination. Check it out the next time you’re in need of a decorative tchotchke or a special birthday gift.
