The Bed Stuy Greenmarket (Lewis Ave/MacDonough St, Saturdays) is an extension of the Cadman Plaza/Ft Greene farmers markets and carries a variety of fruits & veggies from different farms throughout the metropolitan area. They also have free-range whole chicken, chicken parts (some already marinated) and sausages. In future weeks, they will be adding milk and eggs and no doubt much else. Like many of the smaller greenmarkets throughout the city, it will be open to the end of November, so you’ll be able to shop there till Thanksgiving. This is its second year.
There wasn’t a massive amount of stuff available, but they certainly cover the basics. I wish there were more exotic items, like, I don’t know, mushrooms, or heirloom tomatoes, or goat cheese, but what there was, was choice. Of course, as the season progresses, it will be different every week.
Simple pleasures: Jewel-like red onions.

First corn of the season!
Good-for-you-greens include collards, kale and swiss chard (the end crate holds freshly dug carrots). There’s also heads of lettuce and fresh tomatoes for making salads. There were also red and white potatoes.
My personal bounty (counterclockwise from lower left): beets ($2/bunch), free range chicken–boneless thighs marinated in oil and rosemary ($3/lb), kale ($2/bunch), peaches ($2 for 4), sweet corn–is there any other kind? (5 ears for $2, 50¢ an ear). We had the chicken, corn, peaches and kale for dinner Saturday night. Yum!

Peaches (so juicy), yellow squash, kale, potatoes. It’s small, yes, but so very nice. And the staff seemed to be having a good time at it, too.
Challenger, I am so happy to read your blog everyday. You go about each day to enlighten your readers about the best of Bedstuy and show the people that beauty does exist within this vast community. I don’t even know what rainier cherries are!!! Heirloom tomatoes are just the kind your grandma used to grow … different colors, irregular shapes, not the round red plastic things from the supermarket.
