Have You Seen This Mural?

martin.jpgScene from Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing”

I reader emailed me to ask if the mural pictured above is located in Bed-Stuy. I’ve never seen it, so I asked a friend of mine who grew up in Brooklyn if she recognized the mural. She didn’t.  Does anyone else know if this mural still exists? If so, where is it located?

Hopefully I’ve fixed this issue. I work on a Mac and a PC. I posted this pic from my PC and I was able to view it without a problem. When I looked at it on my Mac, I couldn’t see it. Crazy.

Changeling I have some news on a new site for Bed Stuy businesses called shopbedstuy.com. This site is still being constructed and we want to get the word out to the community to support local businesses as a means to improving the community. These businesses are providing employment, goods and services and should not be mistaken for businesses that are in the community but are not for the community. Please help spread the word.

Shopbedstuy.com sounds like a wonderful idea! Leo, if you like, you can email me any additional details backchannel (thechangeling@bedstuyblog.com) and I’ll be sure to do a post on it. It would be so nice to have site that would include information on all of the high quality businesses in the neighborhood.

I’ve heard about this mural but don’t know where it is.

  8. Richard says:

If it was filmed near Lex and Quincy, it should be around there…I’ll have to walk the blocks.

    Hi Leo,

I like the shopbedstuy.com site based on what you have up there now. I didn’t see a way to contact you but have a request. Can you put everything on a map? It would be great to see where all the shops are located in one place. This can be especially useful for people new to the area or just checking it out for the first time who want to identify areas to go to where they can shop/eat/drink.

I’m looking forward to seeing more!!

Leo love your site! How can I submit you are missing a few (Brooks Valley) as well as I see a few typos (dining for example)…

    Thanks!!!

  11. Leo says:

Thanks for the feed back, the site is still under construction and we have already designed the map with a list of the businesses it will be available the first week of August the latest. I’ll check for the Brooks Valley issue as that is where we held our ist meeting in January. Don’t forget the Common Grounds grand opening on Monday at 9:00am the borough Prez is expected.

I think this mural is on Stuyvesant Ave near Lexington. There was one other mural in that movie, I think it was of Mike Tyson and that one may still exist. Take a stroll along Stuyvesant – that’s where the movie was filmed.

  13. Sonson says:

I was raised in Bed-Stuy and lived here for over 20 years. I was there for the filming of “Do The Right Thing”, and the “Fight The Power” video. I believe the location of the mural was Stuyvesant and Lexington, not to far from where I live. I believed the said mural indeed included Mike Tyson. I loved seeing that mural in the hood- it made me feel so proud of Bed-Stuy and the fact that it was in a movie by Spike Lee, about where I lived.
Sadly, as the years passed, the paint started to take its time peeling and the mural itself started to fade. In the end… a building/ home(s) were constructed blocking/covering what was once a symbol of my youth, my black solidarity, my proof of Hollywood comes to the Hood, and my do or die pride…

  14. Richard says:

The mural is there, but a new building is covering up most of it. The Mike Tyson mural is also there, but mostly faded. The building that was used as Sal’s Pizzeria is gone as well as the Korean grocery store. They are both empty lots.
