Searching for Artsy-Craftsy Types in Bed-Stuy
By The Changeling | August 1, 2007
After reading Alexa’s post on the Lewis Avenue Market and seeing all of the crafts being sold there, I began to wonder whether there were any knitting groups in the neighborhood. I couldn’t think of any. Do you know of any knitting circles or crafting groups in Bed-Stuy? Given that our neighborhood is so large and that there are now several nice cafes that can serve as gathering places, it seems only natural that there must be some knitters or crafters out there who meet regularly as a group.
If you’re already a member of a Bed-Stuy crafting group and you’re interested in expanding your crafting circle with new members, or if you’re interesting in starting a new crafting group, please post your group’s information (meetup time, location, etc.) below.

I do not know of any knitting circles in the neighborhood….but I’d certainly LOVE to join. I’ve been knitting (on and off) for the past 4 years. Would be great to get together with others!

I would love to meet other crafty people too. I knit, crochet, and sew. I live near Bread Stuy and I’m in walking distance from many of the cafe’s reviewed on this blog. Maybe we could figure out which of them would be the best one to meet at and things like day and time.

I’m a scrapbooker. Would be nice to meet others.

i’m crafty and artsy and all that jazz. more artsy than crafty, i would say. i don’t knit, but i would love to meet other generally creative folk particularly utilizing creativity for activism.

Hey, I’d totally do this, too! I don’t knit, but I would join a sewing circle/ general crafty gathering…

I have a ton of fabric scraps I would love to give to a quilting group, senior citizen’s group, kid’s group, or any individual who would actually use it. I would also love to meet other artists and crafty types. I’m in CH, but on the border, and a former BS dweller. If anything gets set up, I’d love to come along too.

I don’t do any crafts, but I like to appreciate them! Please feel free to use this blog to get in touch with each other and organize something–or maybe we can start a mailing list for crafters?
August 2nd, 2007 at 1:22 pm
What day would everyone like to meet? How often, twice a month? What would everyone like to see happen?
August 2nd, 2007 at 4:57 pm
My roommate and I both knit quite avidly, but neither of us would describe ourselves as crafters. We’re near Halsey and Thompkins, so it’s easy to get over to Bread Stuy or elsewhere should the need arise.

I double heart all sorts of crafting and was thinking of starting a group. Good to know this tread is going on.
I know that Food 4 ThoughtCafe is going through changes and could use all the support we can lend. I vereify it is worthwhile of this support too. I’d like to propose that as a meeting location but I’m not 100% when they will re-open.
In the meantime, how about we meet in a shady spot in Von King/ Tompkins Park or Fulton Park? I’m also in favor of meeting at Tiny Cup or Common Ground–which are a bit more spacious for meetings. Bread Stuy is a little small for this purpose, imho.
I’d prefer to meet on a weekend afternoon–Sunday would be my first choice. 1pm being an ideal time for me. Twice a month sounds nice.
Who is making executive decision? If you build it I will come. I’d even help organize it, but I’d like to do it with others. August is bad for me and I think a lot of others.(I’ll be out of town on the 12th and 19th.) I think we’d get a good turn out if we started the group in September, when kids are back in school and folks aren’t vacationing as much. We’d also have more time to invite people.

I wouldn’t mind sharing the organizational responsibility with Olivia. Two Sundays a month sounds cool to me. I’m up for starting this month or next whichever suits the most people. Maybe we can meet in the park one Sunday while the weather is still nice and support a local business on the other.
August 3rd, 2007 at 2:24 pm
Count me in too. I’ve been knitting about 2 years -learned from the accountant on my job, but we just have not been able to get a group going. I wouldn’t mind sharing the organizational duties, as well. It would be a positive addition for the community!

Yay Nettie! I love your idea of alternating locations btw cafe and park while it’s warm. Perhaps we can continue the discussion on first meeting date here on this comments section. For purely selfish reasons, I propose Sunday, Aug 26, unless people would like to meet this Sunday. (I’m away on Aug 12 and 19.)
In the meantime before the first meeting, I’ll collect names and email addresses of interested people. Please send to sugarshakesATgmail.com with “Bed-Stuy Craft Group” somewhere within the message or subject. (I get A LOT of email and that will help me sort it.)
Nettie, I’m also going to post message asking for interested people on B Shine listserve. Let’s communicated via email about other ways we can get the word out.
Whoo!

I’m cool with the 26th, but I wouldn’t mind getting together before then. Should we make the first meeting in or outdoors? I think I would like to check out Tiny Cup. Although depending on the size of the group we may not be able to fit.
So can we set August 26, at 1 pm, at Tiny Cup as the location to see if that works for everyone? With perhaps and alternative date and time for the next two Sundays (12, 19)to see which gets the most votes? What does everyone think?
August 4th, 2007 at 8:13 am
Crafting would certainly be delightful! My Sundays in Aug. are mostly booked. I’d like to participate starting in September! My interest is in quilting and embroidery.
Best,
-Sabrina

I would like to participate also. But wont be able to until Sept. I will keep checking in.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:10 am
If everyone who has left a comment here/ is interested sends me their name and email address (and vote for start date–if they have a preference), Nettie and I can keep them in the loop via a mailing list I’ve started to build.

Would you guys mind other brooklynites outside of Bed-stuy joining your group? My partner and I are looking into moving to Bed-Stuy and are artsy-crafty and would like to meet people from the neighborhood.
August 7th, 2007 at 8:20 pm
Sure the crafty community in inclusive, I have someone from Long Island interested in coming to meetings as well.
August 8th, 2007 at 2:07 am
I can’t speak for everyone else but I think the group should be open to all, especially folks who are planning to move here! I’m mostly interested in the meetings being in our ‘hood, but apart from that I’d be happy to craft with folks from far and wide.
August 9th, 2007 at 8:01 am
I’m not sure if I’ll be able to join in, but I’m crafty (and have lots of crafty friends) and would love to keep in touch… I’m sending you an email, Olivia!
August 13th, 2007 at 11:06 am
We’re having our first meeting August 26th at 1 PM.
Going forward from there we’ll meet every 1st and 3rd Sunday at 1pm, so the following meetings are Sep 2 and Sep 16. Locations to be announced. Please email me (sugarshakesATgmail.com) if you’d like to be added to mailing list, otherwise check here for updates.
August 13th, 2007 at 10:05 pm
The Aug 26th meeting will be held at Tiny Cup cafe (279 Nostrand Ave. @ Clifton). Please be there by 1pm, as I could only reserve the table from 1-1:15 since this is one of their busiest times.
August 14th, 2007 at 2:10 am
This is great I will definitely come through!!!
and I can not wait to meet everyone!!!
see you all soon!
August 14th, 2007 at 4:38 pm

August 14th, 2007 at 8:19 pm
I want to try and make it to the meeting - I’m down!
August 23rd, 2007 at 11:19 am
I don’t mean to be an authoritarian nag, BUT Nettie and I are wishing to make this a little organized. I’d like to collect the email address and name of everyone who says they are coming from these comments. Then I can send you and email once a week and let you know where the meeting locations will be and inform of any changes. It also makes it easier to follow the RSVPs. Thanks SO much. sugarshakes@gmail.com

The meeting was a success! Big thanks everyone who blessed us with their presence and to Lisa and everyone at Tiny Cup for being such great hosts!
You can see pictures from the meeting at our new
flickr photo pool.
We’ve also created a Google Group! You can join this group to get updates. (You don’t have to send me an email anymore.)
