Grand Opening: Emily’s Treasures
By The Changeling | August 14, 2007
A brand new antiques shop has appeared on Myrtle Avenue between Taaffe and Kent. This shop, Emily’s Treasures, is co-owned by the mother-son team of Alison and Michael, and they’ve put together a really nice selection of special collectible items. Athough the shop has been open for a couple of weeks, he grand opening is scheduled for this Sunday, August 19th.
I love the storefront that Emily’s Treasures occupies. Its glass display windows and recessed entryway remind me of storefronts from long ago. It matches perfectly with the cool antiques and thrift shop items that adorn every section of the store.
Emily’s Treasures stocks a wide range of items with a little something for everyone. She sells high quality antique furniture, lighting, clothing and accessories, records, and collectibles, and whether you are an investment banker looking for antique pieces for your brownstone or a Pratt student on a limited budget, you can find something you’ll want in this store.
If you are looking for something and you don’t see it in the store, ask Alison if she has it. She says that if you can’t find it, she’ll get it for you. Alison has only part of her large collection in the store, so she’s in the process of creating a catalog with images of all of her pieces included so that customers will be able to browse her entire collection of antiques, including the items that are not on the premises. She’s also going to be setting up a website for the store in the near future.
Alison also has tons of records. Not all of them are in the store, so if you record collectors are looking for something in particular, be sure to ask if you don’t see it in the store’s selection. I took a delightful walk down memory lane while I was browsing the record collection on my first visit.
IÂ found this gem from the ’80s. I was immediately taken back to junior high school just by seeing Phil Collins’ face. This is definitely Collins’ best record, and except for the abysmal clunker “Sussido” it’s a pretty good pop album. If you could somehow replace “Sussido” with “Against All Odds” and then add “Separate Lives” to the tracklist then this album would have to be renamed “No Jacket Required–The Best of Phil Collins.”
I also found this! I love The Doobie Brothers! I purchased this album 10 years ago in San Diego, but one of my friends “borrowed” it from me and I never saw it again. I took this album’s reappearance as a sign that I should buy it again, and this time I’m not lending it out to anyone. The Doobie Brothers don’t really need any more praise as one of the best bands of the ’70s, but this album in particular is a favorite of mine because it’s the album with the best cover photo. If you glance at the cover photo of “Minute by Minute” it becomes painfully clear that Michael McDonald is ready to leave the group and embark on a solo career. Notice how everyone is looking at the camera, happy to have completed the album.
…except for Michael McDonald. His sights are set on the solo life.
In addition to The Doobies, I also picked up a jazz album by the recently departed Dakota Staton. My mom is a big Dakota Staton fan.
Don’t forget to stop by Emily’s Treasures this Sunday, August 19th for the grand opening event. And pick up some threads while you’re there–every Sunday there is a clothing sale. All clothing is 10% off.
Although I didn’t get a chance to see it, Emily’s Treasures has a backyard lounge area where you can relax and enjoy books with a tall glass of Emily’s lemonade or ice tea. The lounge area will be open after this Sunday’s grand opening. See you there!

Jimmy Legs, maybe a more appropriate question would be “What band has Michael McDonald not been in?” He was in Steely Dan, and he sang backup for Ambrosia and Christopher Cross and every other act from the 1970s. I’m convinced Michael McDonald slept in recording studios and showed up in other artists’ sessions uninvited. It’s the only way he could show up on every album from that decade.

Don’t forget the Doobie Brothers! His voice is the sound of the Doobie Brothers.

More important might be Phil Collins face wishing he was back in Genesis instead of embarking on the biggest chalk eating solo career ever.. Nice move Phil. Now go get behind your drum kit and stop singing Sussudio.
