New Restaurant Alert: Lulita on Franklin

When I was biking around the neighborhood this past weekend, I noticed a new little takeout place on Franklin. It’s called Lulita and it is located at 344 Franklin Avenue between Lexington and Greene.
The young lady and young man working behind the counter were very friendly. I chatted with them for awhile and I asked them who Lulita was. They said that the owner liked the name so she decided to use it for her business. I really liked the feel of this little spot.
 
Colorful candles adorn the pass-through window separating the kitchen and the counter area.
 
I’m not a fan of the long, cold, dark winters here in New York, so anything that makes me forget it’s autumn is a good thing. The minute I stepped into this place, I felt like I was in a sunny, warm climate somewhere far away. (The fact that I was wearing a fleece hoodie that was making me sweat helped to sustain this illusion.)
Lulita has been open for about three weeks. Has anyone tried any of the dishes? They said that they would deliver east of Marcy so I’m going to try them out soon.

Tried their fish tacos the other night, which were really good. In fact, I thought they were better than Bonita and definitely cheaper. The people are really nice, too.

one of the owners from cafe lafayette in fg opened this. we went the other night and had the chicken tacos which were fantastic, and authentic-much much better than pequena and bonita, and he’s priced everything on the menu really well. they do deliver and while we were waiting for our order, the menus had just run out—seems that they’re doing really well already—yum.
(by the way-he’s also planning to open a brick oven pizza spot on the same block…)

forgot to mention that this is definitely a takeout spot, or a sit-in-the-window and grab a bite spot…it’s tiny.

The place looks really authentic Mexican, rather than an homage to Mexican like Bonita (which I like, but for different reasons). I’m surprised that the place is owned by a cafe/pizza owner. I hope he or she is partnering with the nice people who run the place.

Aww, it’ll happen soon. Even though they said that they would deliver to me, I had to beg them and promise that I would order $10-15 worth of stuff just to make it a worthwhile delivery.

wow…i saw the place as i was leaving heavenly crumbs bakery but didnt venture across the street to check it out. After the review, will have to trek back over from Clinton Hill.

No, I meant east of Marcy. I live east of Marcy and I told them that and they said they would deliver to me.

When I was asking them about the delivery zone I should have pinned them down to an easternmost boundary.

This place sounds great. will definitely try it. my boyfriend and i just relocated from Los Angeles and we have yet to try AMAZING tacos. anyway, has anyone noticed the wine shop that opened on Marcus Garvey across from the Brown Sugar Club. it looks really cute. (Changeling–I think it deserves a post with more info if you can do it!) And I don’t think there are any other wine stores in the neighborhood. If you haven’t seen it, go check it out. I think it is called de Olivera?? (sorry i can’t remember what it’s called.) It is one block north of Compare Foods.

i’ll try it…i’m just glad they don’t have bullet proof windows and an iron gate up like some of these other little take out joints. Has anyone noticed how little, i mean a little Malcolm X Blvd. is slowly changing? cafe, harware store, vintage store… I say bring it!

I walked by this place this weekend, it looks adorable! Of course I completely spaced on picking up a menu. Does anybody know if their menu is available anywhere on line?

Late post but-
In my current hungover state Im craving some Mexican, so I just walked up to this place and it looks closed for good! They were not open, but the windows were open and the screens seemed to be broken in (bars in-tact.) The stools were up on the counter and there were no signs of life, although there was stil stuff in there. I couldnt look really well because there was a cop standing there and I didn’t want to mill around- anyone know if it’s still open?!

what happened to it? i have been calling and trying to order for a while now. i was so psyched as i was starting to think bed stuyers has something against mexicans. by the way, why are there so few mexican places in the stuy? Changeling -please find out what happened to our mexican food joy!!!

i’ve been meaning to post this for a while, because we’ve been calling for several weeks with no luck. the phone rings and rings and no answer. what’s going on lulita????

I, too, tried to order from them about a month ago and got the same thing- the phone rang forever and nobody answered.
Also, I concur. there should always be more Mexican! And tapas joints!
