Things I Will Miss Over the Winter

By Alexa11221 | November 28, 2007

The Bed Stuy Farmers Market (Youth Market) on Lewis Avenue! I went every Saturday from July to Labor Day to pick up in-season fruits and vegetables, free-range chicken, bacon and sausages.

And every weekend, Shane and Giovanni and a rotating cast of characters were cheerful, helpful and funny. They froze their fingers rummaging in the ice-filled cooler to find the perfect piece of chicken and they added purchases up accurately after weighing. Sometimes they even did it without a calculator. Their math teachers must be so proud.

The weekend before Thanksgiving was the last day of the market (it will re-open in June) and I for one will miss them.

Thank you Youth Market workers!

Ah, the luxury of nice fruits and vegetables. It will be sad not to see them. The green market in Union Square is open year round and even in the winter it’s fun to go there and sit warm cider.

Hello!! I’m trying to find a coordinator or contact person for this market. If anyone can give me a name and a phone number/email that would be great! I am currently doing research for a book to be published in April and I would like to include information about the Bed Stuy market.
