I am pro-homeownership, but I’m not too sure about this offer. Buy a house and they’ll throw in a car at closing? Hmph. At least they put some serious forethought into this and chose to give away Toyotas. (They know that when your crappy new construction home falls apart in a year or two, at least you can take up residence in your good ol’ dependable Camry!) They’re hoping that one serious buyer will apply.
it’s not like these homes are price much lower than homes that need work, but were better built from the beginning.
did anyone have to do any major renovation to their homes. would it be possible to start a renovation section on this site, especially if some people bought an older home which had some character but needed work.
Hey Sally! I haven’t done any home reno, but that’s because I’m not a brownstone owner (sigh)…maybe one day. In any case, I don’t know if I have the stomach to survive even a small renovation. I love watching HGTV, but that’s because you can watch the renovation process from start to finish in 30 minutes!
The reno section suggestion is a great idea! We’ll certainly consider it.
What block are u on? you can’t have a frame house, there are so few around.
Hey anonymous, why can’t I have a frame house? Maybe I have one of the few around. And as for my block, I’d like for some things about me to remain a mystery. I’m sure YOU can appreciate that.
There are lots of us who have a frame houses, but everyone always talks about bedstuy having these brownstones.
As far as the location we always like to talk about things especially that we notice in our area, and if you want to remain mysterious that’s fine. But we’re trying to build the community up and show others we can move to certain blocks and they all aren’t in stuy heights or brownstones and we took a chance elsewhere.
That car could come in handy…
There was a newly-constructed building being built on Quicey between Stuyvesant and Malcolm X that fell down during that bad wind/rain storm earlier this year!
Be leary of these new constructions homes and hope the changeling doesn’t have one.

BEWARE! These are the remaining sub-prime related junk mortgages trying to sucker in the unsuspecting. Red flags: incentives, teaser rates, “affability” incentives all point to resets a year or two down the road and often written in the fine print of the mortgage.
Additionally, with housing prices set to collapse in ’08 you’ll be stuck with a mortgage far greater than the home is worth.

Can I get a brownstone within my price range then?
Changeling, I’m actually kind glad in an odd way that you don’t have a brownstone, because sometimes people think if you don’t have one you are much less than those that do. However I think it would be beneficial to know the area you or others are in so that can provide insights and observations especially on these areas. Bedstuy is a big place, and we could be talking vaguely for years and years without pinpointing certain areas and what we think of them. Just my thoughts.
You can gather from my Fresh Direct post that I’m near The Mynt. I often talk about the North Stuy because I’m most familiar with that area. This is the area near Project Row.
I have a fondness for this area, but it’s pretty much close to clinton hill, but the projects along myrtle are there as well. The Mynt should provide a surge of gentrification for this area.
There are some frame houses across the street from the gas station there that are often for sale. Plus the myrtle townhouses are lovely, and there are some great people that live in those.
I know people don’t like the G but I think it’s a ccool area.
Changeling. I’ve always been fascinated with the homes across from the Myrtle Townhouses. They way the first floor longer or shorter than the other floors. I’d love to know the history behind that.
Also there used to be a man that had chickens and dogs, and wrote all these spanish things on his house and fence, and now he’s gone or just around the corner. Do you have any insight on these great fascinations in your area?
I’m not sure which homes you’re talking about–they sound strange.
I do remember the place with the writing on it. It was a flat fix place and there were lots of messages about heaven and God along with two mangy dogs that would walk around the subway station all of the time. I couldn’t help but see them on my way to work every morning!
do you know where the gas station is near myrtle and nostrand, we’ll the brick townhouses next to them on myrtle are the myrtle townhouses, right across from there should be these odd shaped homes.
those dogs would wandered by the subway, i was always afraid of them, but didn’t realize they wandered.
i am sure that area is going to change a bit with the mynt building, do you find yourself going further up on myrtle towards ridgewood/bushwick, or to clinton hill down on myrtle for walks, and stores, etc.
the closest supermarket is associated down in clinton hill area.
