The Y Personal Fitness Program
By The Changeling | December 5, 2007

The Bedford-Stuyvesant YMCA has started a program for individuals who are interested in adopting a healthier lifestyle. It’s specifically geared toward individuals who are new to exercise and those who may be returning to the gym after a long absence (guilty!).
The program is called the Y Personal Fitness program, and according to their materials, it is “designed for anyone interested in making a lasting lifestyle change by incorporating fitness into their normal routine.”

The program runs for twelve weeks and it allows an individual to build a fitness routine that he/she can enjoy. During the first three weeks your fitness coach will help you to identify obstacles to exercising and give you tips to stay motivated. You’ll also learn how to set reasonable fitness goals as you begin your cardiovascular training. In weeks four to six you begin strength training, with additional strength training exercises being added in weeks seven through nine. In the final three weeks you will engage in your full routine of cardio and strength training, and at the end you will evaluate your progress with your fitness coach.
Taking part in this program is easy–all you have to do is to exercise at the YMCA a minimum of three days a week (on your own schedule) and the program will provide you with four individual training sessions with a Y Personal Fitness Coach. The best part is this: it’s free to all YMCA members.
It’s no secret that I am a fan of our YMCA. It’s a wonderful facility where people of all ages and fitness levels can enjoy working out. This program is a part of an effort by our YMCA to reach out to residents who may be interested in utilizing the gym but aren’t sure where or how begin. So if you have a friend or neighbor who has been thinking about joining the Y, please give them a nudge and encourage them to join and take part in this program.

This is a great deal. Looking at the pictures of the facilities it looks beautiful inside, almost like an expensive Equinox or something!
I think people used to think of Y as they dirty places that were cheap, and homeless people hung out at, but not this place. How are their shower facilities - group showers or individual? And is there a locker rental available, or laundry facilities on site? Ok, I’m pushing things a bit.
How far away from the nearest train?
The pictures and write up on this was great, just in time for the holidays. And to get a personal trainer is great. Anyone else feel a little intimidated by these gorgeous personal trainers at other gyms that wear tight clothes, get their teeth bleached, and have these amazing bodies? Who can compete with that!

Sally, this place is really a blessing. They do have lockers, but I’m not sure about laundry facilities. You have to bring your own towel.
I’ve never seen group showers before! That sounds like something in a prison! LOL. Overall the women’s bathroom/locker room area is great.
It’s only a couple of blocks south of the Myrtle-Willoughby G train (Bedford exit). B44 and the Gates Avenue buses stop a block away.

Great stuff as usual, and a goal could be the Bed Stuy 10k in October 2008 - that should keep the weight off for the year.

I’m getting ready for that ‘08 race! I’m kicking myself for not being able to attend this year’s race. Won’t happen next year!

There were group showers in college locker rooms! I won’t go there re: the prison locker rooms.
