Bed-Stuy Real Estate Picks 12/21/07
By The Changeling | December 21, 2007
RENTALS
Where the Mastodons Roam (#1)
#1 — $1000 — 1 BR: The ad says that this place is prehistoric, which I think means that the street has a lot of ferns and dinosaurs on it. This is why the rent is so affordable. Definitely worth checking out. Quincy and Tompkins Bedford-Nostrand G
#2 — $900 — 1 br: Ok, so that sidewalk could use a little work, but what do you expect for less than a thousand dollars a month? The apartment looks pretty good inside and they cheerfully welcome your pets. It’s a couple of blocks from the sorry G train, but the walk won’t kill you. Greene and Throop Bedford-Nostrand G
#3 — $1200 — 3 br: I didn’t believe this listing when I saw it. The price is so cheap it’s unbelievable. This apartment is located in the Ocean Hill section of the neighborhood, so the prices are more reasonable than they are anywhere else in Bed-Stuy. It’s close to the train station, so that’s a plus. I’m not sure about the amenities in this area. My guess is that they are limited to nonexistent.
MacDougal and Rockaway Rockaway C
#1 — $690,000 — 2 family: This is a cute home and it has been renovated inside. The price seems a little high for the area, though.
Decatur and Saratoga Ralph C
#2 — $849,000 — 3 family: I walk by this building pretty often. It looks nice and it’s near a lot of amenities, but it’s located at a very busy intersection and near an elementary school. I believe that it was marketed by Corcoran until recently. The attached building behind this one is being marketed by Corcoran.
Willoughby and Nostrand Myrtle-Willoughby G
#3 — $320,000 — Loft Condo: This is the last condo unit in The Lofts at Dekalb development. These condos look great, but they are, unfortunately, a long walk from anything remotely cool in this neighborhood. Apparently this doesn’t bother the folks in the other 31 units. Dekalb and Throop Myrtle-Willoughby G
#4 — $645,000 — 2 family: This plain Jane house isn’t much to look at from the front, but I like its little backyard. It might be worth a gamble if the seller is willing to negotiate on the price. Madison Nostrand A
PICK OF THE WEEK! #5 — $875,000 — 3 family: The ad screams, “IN THIS 3 FAMILY HOME THERE IS ALONE 2 APARTMENTS.” I don’t know what the hell that means, but who cares? Look at the patio! The ad also mentions that the place has “grown molding.” Well you know what? We’ll just have to rip it out and replace it with crown molding. It’ll all be worth it when we’re spending our summers lounging on that cool brick patio!

i really look forward to your real estate picks every week. love them!
rental # 1 looks pretty good for being pre-historic. i was expecting something more cave-like.
as for the pick of the week… the patio says it all. beautiful. and nice floors, too.

Sales #2 is a flip, I think. I remember seeing something about it in the recent sales on Brownstoner a few months back. I think there’s only one 3 family on that intersection.

OMG I just read the ad for Rental #1 — it’s pre-historic and has 1.2 bedrooms. So the 2nd bedroom is 1/5 the size of the other?
Apartment hunting was never so much fun when I was doing it!

@ laduchessa: I really like selecting them just so I can hear what others think about the properties. You folks make it fun.
@ Alexa: Correctamundo! That’s a flip. When I first moved to Bed-Stuy I think that the building was abandoned and it had a sign that read “Lydon Baines Johnson Health Clinic” or something similarly odd. Then one day they started ripping it apart and doing the reno thing. I think I’d like to see the inside.
LOL about the 1.2 bedrooms! I was going to mention it, but I knew I’d be accused of being a math snob if I did. Thank you, Alexa, for doing the honors.

This is a great feature, and your comments are a hoot, Changeling.
I think you could fill an entire blog with the mis-spellings and odd comments you see when searching for real estate.

Rentals:
#1Wow a pink house - is this in Miami?
#2 If you try to overlook the sidewalk you may trip on it. Why doesn’t the city fix these and bill the owner. I heard that’s what is suppose to happen.
#3 A low price for a 3 bedroom, but you have to walk on vinyl floors. Worth it!
Sales:
#1 The outside is charming on this home.May be near the massive projects.
#2 Link doesn’t work. I’d like to see what I can’t afford!
#3 I looked at these, and they seemed nice but the walk to the subway is tough.
#4 This is my favorite. It looks so tall, and love the arch over the doorway. That white looks so pure in the city.
#5 The pick of the week doesn’t have enough pictures for me. Yes the backyard is wonderful, although stacking bricks that high scares me.
What kind of features does everyone have in their apartment or homes that sold them on it?

@Newbie 2: Thanks. The things you find while searching for real estate are hilarious.
@sally: Try the link now. I think every Brooklynite would say that space was one of the features that sold them on their place (especially the Brooklynites who are former Manhattanites).

Interesting stuff. I hadn’t been at the site in a little while. The move to real estate was pretty smooth.
fyi: A problem with the link to this one:
#2 — $849,000 — 3 family: I walk by this building pretty often. It looks nice and it’s near a lot of amenities, but it’s located at a very busy intersection and near an elementary school. I believe that it was marketed by Corcoran until recently.

Take care.

I’m sorry, but I can’t seem to fix the link. When I do, it works for awhile and then it links you to a blank page on the realtor’s website. Strange…
