I survived the holidays …

By Alexa11221 | December 28, 2007

did you?

Local highlights included my first visit to Olivino, which I liked! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but they have a good, if small selection, including one of my favorite Australians, Hill of Comfort shiraz. I also got an excellent Italian white.

The co-owner, Tony, couldn’t have been nicer or more polite. And they have Red Truck and Big House Red, the posh wine shop equivalents of Yellow Tail, for very reasonable prices.

Then I went to the liquor store on Hancock & Throop for rum for the eggnog and got to experience both ends of wine and spirits retailing in the neighborhood.

I also took the J train into Manhattan for some shopping. Since I work at home and generally only take the G train to convey my son to school, I’m seldom on the J. I had forgotten how awesome the ride over the rooftops and across the Williamsburg Bridge can be. I love the stained glass art on the platforms. Also, I never have to wait very long for the J.

On the downside, the platform vibrates terrifyingly when a train arrives, which I always think can’t be good.

Has anyone actually ever seen a Z train?

Hey there, this has nothing to do in response to your post, but I was wondering if you could post the following article on a fire that occurred yesterday on Stuyvesant Ave: http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/28/nyregion/28fire.html?_r=1&ref=nyregion&oref=slogin

I saw the fire burn up the apt and am interested in any help that could be offered to the family. I’m wondering if any of the blog’s readers might know the girl and if a community effort could be put towards at least bringing the family some food. Thanks,

    Al Hanson

What stop did you get on the J at? Does the J connect to the G at some point?

I saw a Z train once, it was pretty nice. I never experienced vibrating platform before.

Z train always comes when you are late and waiting for the J, it skips stops in a taunting, “you are close to your destination but not as close as you would have been had you taken the J train” sort of way. Very annoying.
