Ticket Quota Met, Case Dismissed

By The Changeling | January 24, 2008

Back in November, we did a post on a Bed-Stuy resident named Robert who had a run-in with the police. You will recall that Robert and his partner were biking in the neighborhood, and they rode their bikes on the sidewalk briefly to avoid getting hit by the B46 and other oncoming traffic. They were given summonses for this offense and they were willing to accept that, but what they couldn’t accept was the behavior of the police when they issued the summons. The police frisked them in front of passers-by, in Robert’s words, “like they were common hoodlums.” Even though he and his partner (who happens to be a lawyer) were cooperating fully with the police, the two felt as though they were being treated like robbery suspects.

Well here’s the update to Robert’s tale. He called the Brooklyn Summons Department (646-386-4831) and was told, “Your case is finished. You do not have to appear in court. You should have received, or will receive, notification of the dismissal in the mail.”
So the police met their ticketing quota and Robert and his partner didn’t have to appear in court.

No, there’s nothing wrong with this system.

God forbid they be treated like other black men in Bed Stuy…

The notion that some people deserved to be humiliated in public, and that the two mentioned in this post don’t, smacks of elitism.

All black men should be treated like hoodlums?

i don’t think anybody deserves to be humiliated in public. unless you are, in fact, a complete dirtball criminal and in that case you should get a pie in the face.

Should ANYONE be treated like “hoodlums”, when they are supposed to be presumed innocent? Obviously, Robert does.

Don, i think the point is that hoodlums should be treated like hoodlums. this term is being used as a conceit so that the author may make plain his point. perhaps you need to read the original post. i think you’re making a mountain out of a molehill.

now, am i saying all molehills are mountains?

Don, where in the post did it say that Robert and his partner are not black themselves?
