Construction in East-Central Stuy

I spotted this last week while walking over to Broadway. At first I was attracted by the nice construction shed (you wouldn’t believe how many bad ones there are) and by what seemed to be a well-done industrial conversion.

I had a moment of hope thinking that perhaps someone was finally building a big box store or a warehouse supermarket or something over there (c’mon, it would be perfect!) but instead it’s probably a soup kitchen.

Not that I think there is anything wrong with this. But the neighborhood has more than a few social service agencies and nowhere near enough decent supermarkets. Everybody deserves easy access to good food.

I was interested to see, however, that St John’s Bread & Life is also a distribution point for a CSA (at 75 Lewis Ave, which I assume is their current office).

On a somewhat related note, WNYC’s Brian Lehrer had a segment today on local food co-ops, during which I learned that Kalabash Food Co-op is moving to 123 Community Space (123 Tompkins Ave). Hey guys, put us on your email list, OK?

I hope this place has good malagatwany, and a good crab bisque wouldn’t hurt either.

WHAT BLOCKS ARE THEY GOING TO BE BETWEEN ON TOMPLINS AVE AND WHEN

    @ irving

123 Tompkins is on the block south of Myrtle, between Myrtle & Vernon. The 123community space link is listed under Bedford Stuyvesant on the blogroll to the right.
