I recently received this information about a video contest open to 9-12th graders in Brooklyn. I sounds like an exciting opportunity for a young filmmaker-to-be:

BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn announces Show Us Your Reel Brooklyn, a borough-wide teen video contest that will launch the new Brooklyn Independent Television show BK 4 Reel. Brooklyn Independent Television is a flagship initiative of Brooklyn Community Access Television (BCAT), a program of BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn.

Participants in the contest are being asked to send in a 2-3 minute video of Brooklyn from their own unique perspective. The video may be in any genre; however, it must be shot in Brooklyn by a 9th-12th grader who either lives in, or attends high school in, the Borough of Brooklyn.

Submissions will be evaluated by a jury of top film and television professionals, including Peter Hedges, writer/director of Dan in Real Life, writer of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape?; Christina Norman, President of MTV; Michael Pressman, writer/director of Frankie and Johnny are Married, and director of To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday; and John Tintori, Chair of the Graduate Division of NYU Film & Television.

One first place winner and two finalists will be presented their awards at a special event co-sponsored by Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz at Brooklyn Borough Hall celebrating the launch of Brooklyn Independent Television’s second season. First prize will be a brand new high definition camcorder donated by H.B. Communications, as well as a $200 cash prize made possible through the generosity of Independence Community Foundation, which has also underwritten second prize ($300) and third prize ($200).

The winning videos will be shown on one of the first episodes of BK 4 Reel, a brand new show on Brooklyn Independent Television, which brings original Brooklyn-centric television into nearly half a million Brooklyn households. The new show will not only feature and promote the work of Brooklyn teen-age videographers, but will be hosted by Brooklyn teens, as well. The contest deadline is February 20, 2008. Official contest entry forms are available at briconline.org/bcat and myspace.com/brooklyntv. Students with specific questions about the contest may write to bk4reel@briconline.org.
