Skylight Gallery Presents Female Aesthetics
By The Changeling | February 8, 2008
Restoration’s Center for Arts and Culture’s latest exhibition, Female Aesthetics, curated by MLJ Johnson, explores how women communicate. This tribute, as a response to the so‐called male dominated field of art and communication, commemorates 40 years of female conversation and involvement with the Center for Art and Culture.
The sixteen artists range in their involvement with Restoration Corporation from its beginnings to the present day. They have engaged in the dialog which has shaped the sense of community which the Corporation has come to represent. For example, Jewel Golden was one of the first women to become part of Restoration’s visual arts collection and recipient of the prestigious Pollack Krasner Award for Fine Arts. Jamillah Jennings was one of the first teachers for Restoration’s visual arts workshop for youth; and, as part of the exhibition, La‐Verne Gittens will create an installation piece inside the gallery, titled “Homecoming”, to reflect her formative years in Bedford-Stuyvesant and to acknowledge that Restoration gave Central Brooklyn’s artists a voice to promote, present, and preserve the arts through it’s Center for Arts and Culture. Other exhibiting artists include: Beryl Benbow, Krystal Brown, Ramona Candy, Mary Chang, Cecile Chong, Diane Davis, Deirdre Harris, Linda Hiwot, Charlotte Ka, Dinga McCannon, Gina Samson, Deborah Singletary, Ava Tomlinson.
Female Aesthetics starts February 9th and runs through March 29 at the Skylight Gallery. A reception will be held on February 23rd and an artist talk on March 8th. The artist talk will provide an opportunity to mingle and socialize with the artists and discuss the theme of the exhibition in detail. A hands-ons workshop for youth ages 7-14 will be held on March 22nd from 2:00 - 5:00 p.m. The workshop will explore the impact of women in their lives, and how their voices influences the youth’s perspective on life.
