RENTALS

Halsey and Throop (#1)

#1 — $4500 — 6 br: Although I’m not sure why anyone would rent a whole building divided into two apartments, I will say that these apartments look very nice. Halsey and Throop Kingston-Throop C

#2 — $1100 — 1 br: This apartment is not far from Saratoga Park. It’s cute and the price is reasonable. Saratoga and Decatur Halsey J

#3 — $1150 — 2 br: Sometimes the smallest things capture my attention and either excite me or turn me completely off. In this ad, the agent makes a point to call the property a “vintage building.” I think that may be code for “raggedy.” And is that the toilet tissue holder on the door of the bathroom? It’s the little things. Anyway, if you can get past these things, then you’ve got yourself a dirt cheap apartment. Decatur and Throop Kingston-Throop C

afro-pick.jpgPICK OF THE WEEK! #4 — $1500 — 2.5 br:Not really close to any train, so you’ll just catch the bus, but with 2 and a half bedrooms, it’s worth it.
Quincy and Marcus Garvey Bedford-Nostrand G

SALES
sales040408.jpg

#1 — $630,000 — building: This poor building is in a really sad state. It caught fire about a year ago and it still bears plenty of scorch marks along the side facing the vacant lot. I predict that this will be torn down and a Fedders building will rise in its place.
Marcy at Vernon Myrtle-Willoughby G

#2 — $410,000 — 1 br + office: I like this cute brownstone condo. It’s something about the amenities that really make it worth it: tax abatement, laundry on the premises, pre-wired audio, etc. Jump on this! MacDonough and Stuyvesant Utica AC

#3 — $750,000 — 2 family: Another keeper. I like this section of the neighborhood because it is much quieter than my area of Bed-Stuy. The building has an owner’s duplex and a top floor rental, and judging from the pics the spaces get a lot of light. There’s an open house this Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Macon and Ralph Utica AC

That condo looks sweet! That is a really nice block and close to the train, Bred-Stuy and the soon to be coming Smoke Joint restaurant. And they let you double park during alternate side, so if you have a car you don’t have to go in search of a spot.

I agree on the Macon house. I love that section of the area. Well kept homes and quiet.

I don’t get the house for rent, but they did a decent job of it. Not sure who would take the whole thing as 2 units, like you said.

re: Macon house – from the listing:
    “BEDFORD-STUYVESANT
The building is located in Bedford-Stuyvesant. If you’re unfamiliar with Bed-Stuy, you can read about it here [link to wikipedia article on Bed-Stuy]. It’s not the greatest neighborhood in the world, but it’s safe, the rent’s cheap, and you’re close to the subway.”
    hmmmmmmmmmmm.

Alexa, I caught that statement in the ad, and it annoyed me too. Can you imagine an agent writing that in their own ad?

@Newbie 2: I’m with you on the condo. I don’t care what the market is doing, it is a lovely place at a decent price.

That 6 br rental on Halsey is a joke. And if your credit is less then 700 cough up another month’s rent in addition to the 3 months you already have to come up with. So that’s $20,000 to live on busy Halsey street – that’s a downpayment on your own house. Is this the biggest con of the year?

Toilet paper holder on the door, uncentered too!

Not sure about the pic of the week. Seems kind of plain, and far from train and $1500 for 2.5 rooms?

Was anyone in sales #1 to see the burn marks? Looks small from outside.

#2 sales is cute, a nice 1 br with office, yes decorated nicely, but macon is a serious block.

Can you or Alexa tell us what style house #3 sales is. There is a piece that sticks out, but part of it is round the other is square – very unusual. Does anyone like or not like this style?

    #3 house:
    Anonymous:
It looks (hard to tell from the photo alone, but I will do my best) like a Romanesque Revival bayfront with a corner turret on the second story, which is odd but not unheard of. But these RE photos often get distorted because they are in a pre-formatted layout, which may or may not accommodate the photo, and there’s no art director or designer aroudn to make sure. So I’d have to go see the house to be sure. Though I’m pretty solid on the Romanesque Revival part

Thanks Alexa! I wish I could have gone to the open house. This sounds like a lovely part of town too.
