Bed-Stuy Real Estate Picks 05/16/08
By The Changeling | May 16, 2008

A Chance to Be Chris Rock! (#3)
#1 — $950 — Studio: You could find a cheaper studio than this one in Bed-Stuy, but this one is brand new. There’s nothing notable about it beyond that, but I had to include it because I thought that the agent’s name was funny, in an only-Bart-Simpson-would-understand kinda way. There’s an open house tomorrow.
Lewis and Lexington Kosciuszko J
#2 — $1550 — 2 br: This is almost Crown Heights, but the price is right and it is near the A train. I’ve always felt that Herkimer was an unusual part of our neighborhood because it seems a bit disconnected, being on the other side of Fulton. If this is a REAL 2 bedroom then go for it. Troy and Herkimer Utica AC
PICK OF THE WEEK! #3 — $1350 — br: Scratch what I said about the previous apartment. It looks like you can get your 2 bedrooms for cheaper, so this is the one you should go for. Remember Being John Malkovich? Well, this apartment looks like it has one of those tiny doors that leads into someone’s soul (see pic #3). Maybe it’s the portal into the soul of Chris Rock, so when you enter it you get to be him for awhile. I’d imagine after your trip you’d be spit out in East New York and then you’d have to find your way back to Bed-Stuy. All this for just $1350! The only catch? It’s not available until July 1st. Still, worth Pick of the Week status.
Marcus Garvey and Macon Kingston-Throop C
#4 — $2600 — 2 br: I think everyone knows by now that I love the Kodachrome Building, but you’ve got to check out this agent’s ad, just for the fun of it. Scroll down to the map of Brooklyn at the bottom and you will see that Clinton Hill has swallowed up Fort Greene and part of Bed-Stuy! It’s like those world maps we used to have in our classes in elementary school. In those maps, America was large and Africa was about the size of Kentucky. Those agents–so funny!
Spencer and Willoughby Myrtle-Willoughby G
#5 — $1500 — 3 br: Ok, first of all this is Ocean Hill and I don’t consider it part of Bed-Stuy, but it’s cheap, and I know SOME PEOPLE would be up in arms because I’ve posted a $2600 2 bedroom apartment this week. Anyway, here’s your cheapo pad. I’d be worried about a broker (or landlord?) who didn’t care that he posted the photo sideways. Enjoy. Saratoga and Marion Chauncey JZ/Ralph C

#4 rental, i believe, is on the border of clinton hill and bay ridge.

I know that 83 Halsey is an advertiser but they are still about 50-70K overpriced which is why they have been sitting for awhile.

LOL, I know! You hear people talk about the borders of CH and the eastern border is going to touch Bushwick soon, but to see the, uh, “reinterpreted” map was a hoot!

@Kevin: I think that is the feeling that many buyers are having when they are looking at properties in the gentrifying areas of Brooklyn. I really wish that I could see 10 years into the future so that I could find out where property values will be compared to ‘05.

#5 is for “artists, proffessionals and cool people only.”
All you uncool people out there, take note! Bed-Stuy is not for you! Especially if you can spell!

Points to you Alexa for catching that! I didn’t even realize that the apt. was described as “georgeous”.

sometimes I think they should break bed-stuy up again like it was in the 1800s.. Bedford Corners, Stuyvesant Heights, Ocean Hill, Thompkins Park etc.. etc…
May 17th, 2008 at 3:47 am
I second that, Morgan.
May 18th, 2008 at 12:51 pm
Morgan–it would help in explaining to people where you live. It’s such a big area. And it’s not all the same. But, where’s Bedford Corners? I’ve heard of Tompkins North, though.
May 19th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
I live on MacDonough Street between Tompkins and Throop… On the street signs it says live in the Stuyvesant Heights historic district. I have a 1883 map od the area and Bedford Corners is the area at Bedford and Fulton. Hancock, Jefferson, Halsey Madison etc… and Bedford is and Bedford is called Bedford Corners in the 1889 real estate ads for new homes on that street.

Cool!

Is there a way to get a copy of Morgan’s map scanned and on this site? I have a scanner, so I would be happy to do it. I think it would be interesting to share that information.

here is a really old map of Bedford Corners http://www.bklyn-genealogy-info.com/Map/1766.Bedford.Corners.html the intersection today is Bedford Ave and Atlantic…

I’d love to add maps like this to the site. Any idea what the northern sections of the neighborhood were called? I really wanted to be a part of Cripplebush, but I think northern Bed-Stuy is too far south to be considered a part of that neighborhood.
May 22nd, 2008 at 1:05 pm
I think Northern Bedford Stuyvesant was Cripplebush near the boarder if Williamsburg and Bushwick.. Sometimes hard to tell from the old maps
May 22nd, 2008 at 3:05 pm
I might be able to claim the Cripplebush name, then. Thanks Morgan!
