Meet Your Neighbors : Episode 9
By Inquisigal | June 18, 2008
Welcome back to “Meet Your Neighbors,” a weekly feature on the Bed Stuy blog that serves to make the introductions between you, our readers, and other people who live or work in Bedford Stuyvesant.
I always like to indulge my inner dilettante every now and then, so last weekend I made it a point to check out the Bed-Stuy Pet Stuy in Fulton Park. I ask you: what could be finer on a sweltering hot Saturday afternoon than watching dogs suffer through the discomfort and humiliation of their owners dressing them up like a ballerina or a Hell’s Angel? Ok, truth be told, the dogs all seemed perfectly cool with the human additions to their wardrobes, and even regaled the crowd with a few tricks involving hula hoops. Prizes were given, water bowls were slurped, and everyone good-naturedly channeled the spirit of late 1980’s-era David Letterman, including Pet Stuy organizer, Madeline Smith. I noticed a particularly natty canine in a soccer outfit being put through his paces by his young owners, so I made their acquaintance, and they were happy to be put through their own paces with the “Meet Your Neighbors” questionnaire. Ready to meet some new neighbors?

Are there any businesses or services that your part of the neighborhood is lacking?: Jason and Joy: We wish that majority of the stores were closer to where we live.
As relative newcomers to the neighborhood, how have you been treated by your neighbors, or the community at large?: Jason and Joy: With open arms.
Do you feel like Bed-Stuy is experiencing “gentrification”?: Jason and Joy: Nope.
Are you religious, and if yes, do you attend local worship services?: Joy: I am Catholic, and I attend St. Matthews Roman Catholic Church on Eastern Parkway and Utica Avenue. Jason: I attend Brooklyn Tabernacle.
How does your religion affect your life or your identity?: Jason and Joy: With the help of our faith and God we try to do the right things, as well as be giving and understanding.
Is there anything in particular that you would like to say to the neighbors who will be reading about you?: Yes, we’d like to share this poem. It’s titled Happiness and was written by Raymond Carver:
So early it’s still almost dark out.
I’m near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.
When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.
They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren’t saying anything, these boys.
I think if they could, they would take
each other’s arm.
It’s early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.
They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn’t enter into this.
Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.
