Zipcar in Bed-Stuy!

By The Changeling | July 7, 2008

As many of you already know, I don’t have a car and haven’t had one for over a decade. I think that I’ve forgotten how to drive. Well CLEAR THE STREETS, because I’m getting ready to get behind the wheel! I just found out that Zipcar has some cars in Bed-Stuy! I thought this information would be helpful to those of you who, like me, don’t care to own a car, but would like to use one from time to time.

I was really surprised to find that Zipcar had cars in the lot on Throop between Ellery and Hopkins (near Woodhull Medical Center). I called Zipcar to find out how long these cars have been available, but the extremely friend customer service rep didn’t have that information.

For more information on Zipcars, visit their website by clicking here. By the way, don’t go searching under “Bedford-Stuyvesant” on their website–since the Throop location is located in the northern part of the ‘hood, it’s listed under “Williamsburg”.

Zipcars have been available at the “Williamsburg” location for at least a couple of months now. We were slightly offended by the creative license they took in mapping the hood, but not offended enough to continue trekking down to the garages in Forte Greene! Perhaps we could convince Fresh Direct to consider us greater Wmsbrg as well?

Thanks for the info, Quincy. The last time I checked Zipcar that location wasn’t available. I guess that was more than a few months ago!

What’s in a name? A lot. If we just started calling ourselves Greater Williamsburg, that pesky lack of services that we currently deal with would disappear completely. Hmmmm, Greater Williamsburg. I think I’m going to use that term occasionally.

Wait isn’t Bedstuy on the other side of Broadway versus Williamsburg. So if anyplace is great Williamsburg it should be Bushwick next door?

The problem with zipcar is they never have cars available. They tempt you but don’t deliver.

I think when we say “the Greater Williamsburg area” we mean to include Bushwick and North Bed-Stuy. ;)

Is that true, Sally? That they never have cars available? Is that the case with the Fort Greene Zipcar locations, or is that the case with just this “Greater Williamsburg” location or both? I’m wondering, because I’m really interested to know how others find this service.

well, whenever I look for zipcars I see them available at the Throop Ave location. But there are only about 3-4 cars there. It’s the closest location to me so it’s always the one I see first.

The only time I’ve had trouble finding the zipcar I want is when I was trying to rent a pickup or minivan on a Sunday afternoon.

I love zipcar! It has really been worth for me. They actually now have a truck in the ft. greene area, which is super handy for occasional trips the the Salvation Army or, say, the Brooklyn Flea to pick up furniture!
