New Cafe Alert: T-Cup Cafe

By The Changeling | August 13, 2008

I just received this from a reader who passed this on his way to work. It’s a new cafe located on Throop between Decatur and Fulton that used to be a tool rental business.

Thanks for the info. and the pic, Christopher!

Yay! I live a block away. I can get my coffee on the way to the subway.

This is really great news… I live around the corner from this place on MacDonough and I will support the New Cafe like I do Peaches and Bread-Stuy. I really wish that we could get rid of that MacDonalds or redesign it to fit the neighborhood. This is a good step in the right direction for Throop Ave. Now lets work on Fulton Street which seems like a lost cause sometimes…

Oh, wow, I never thought about that, Morgan.! It would be nice if the McDonald’s didn’t look so garish. I’ve been to other cities and towns where the McDs were required to “fit in.” It was really nice to see.

Your right Changeling that MickyDs belongs in queens someplace… That parking lot is not used that much… Deep down I think we should just close it down. That stuff is not good for anyone even though I am guilty of going there and getting the apple pies lol. We already have one near Nostrand and one east near Atlantic, that is plenty for BS. I think LA is trying to get rid of all the fast food places in black and latino neighborhoods.

I was just about to say that we should take a tip from L.A and reduce the fast food joints ’round these parts.

I personally think that is is a shame that there aren’t more cafes located in South Stuy..Bed stuy is huge i wish someone would think out of the box and do a cafe on Greene avenue by Patchen and or Malcolm X

It is going to happen around there Sarah just wait for Stuyvesant Heights and Bedford Corners area of BS to “gentrify”. The Green/Patchen (Ocean Hill) section of BS is a very lovely and will become a fun trendy area soon.. I really see that happening soon… Most people really don’t even know about this section where you are Sarah of Bedford Stuyvesant…. They think it SOOOO FAR OUT like we are in Nebraska or something.

@Morgan….i never understood why people think that this part of Bed Stuy is far out….to be honest I can get to 34th street alot faster on the J and the Q trains thant taking the A! but not to get off subject I have always wanted to do something like this in my area(open a coffe shop or cafe)
I think people do not open business like this because they don’t think that people in my side of stuy will not support it…so unfair!

Malcolm X is changing slowly. There are a few businesses up and running. It will take a bit of time but better businesses will come to that strip.

re: McD’s–not to mention the service there is slower and ruder than a constipated judge judy. i too admit to having been in for a quick and cheap appetite fix. but my experience has always made me miserable and angry.

sorry, just looking for a reason to bash that mcd’s

YAH! I saw the sign on my walk as well… I looked up and and around and did not think it was the tools rental place! VERY excited!

Now all those who commented on here and walk down Throop to the C train… Can you all file a complaint to get the lot cleaned up on Throop between Jefferson and Hancock! The lot and trash is spilling onto the sidewalk (construction debris… twigs and tree cutting… black garbage bags for Lord knows what!)

I have filed MANY complaints and taken pictures and sent to the Dept of Sanitation… I get the buerocratic run around… The latest: there is a structure on the lot and therefore not the responsibility/just diction of the Dept of Sant but the Dept of Health…

Perhaps if more people complain it will help? If this were Park Slope, BK Hts. or anywhere else you know this would not be tolerated!!!

    Simoneisis,
I’ll make a complaint as well. And what about the crazy guy near there that blast his music from the window- in the early morning and evening? Luckily I walk fast, so I’m only bothered for a few minutes.
    I don’t understand why his neighbors don’t call 311!

Sometimes I think I call 311 too much!!! I feel that I put all the money have and a lot of time into Bedford Stuyvesant and I hate to have people disrespect the neighborhood. We do need more shops like this opening up in the area..

I recently noticed a business is opening on Tompkins near me. I was thrilled until they posted a sign saying that a Crown Fried Chicken was coming soon. I have been wondering how legally to voice my opposition to the expansion of these types of poverty-mongering businesses. How put pressure on Chinese take-outs and late night bodegas that make no effort to curb loitering, graffiti or littering. And the C-Town (who is responsible for checking the expiration dates there? The gray meat?) How put pressure on absentee landlords, for that matter? How get rid of McDonald’s on Throop? There, I said it. I want to close down the McDonald’s on Throop Avenue.

Please tell me that your joking Quincy. No more fast food places in Bedford Stuyvesant!!! This stuff is killing the people in our community. If you ca find a way to stop this please let me know… I too would like to close the McDonald’s.

My post may have been an exercise in hyperbole, but the sentiment is genuine. I’m not anti-fast food altogether, but really, nothing good comes out of some of these places: dietary, environmental, cultural, economic. The C-Town, I admit, is the lesser of the evils because there is no other grocery accessible on this end of the Stuy. But do they have to disrespect and condescend to their clientele so blatantly via the quality of products they offer? There’s a Jamaican cafe on Tompkins between Gates & Quincy that is phenomenal. A little slow, as I remarked months ago on this blog. But they are well-worth the wait, I’ve since discovered. The pizza shop on Tompkins & Lex is also quite good: food as well as their interaction with the community (they’ve weathered many years in this location, I understand). It’s the chains and the carpetbaggers I object to. And clearly I’m not alone. I don’t prefer a vacant storefront, but I don’t care to sit idle either while people are being poisoned, however slowly.

When the government stops subsidizing the over-production of corn (and corn by-products that make up most of McDonald’s menu) then maybe we’ll see fast-food places diminish. The subsidy allows for cheap food (i.e bad for you) to be made and this is passed on to the consumer. I see the appeal, the stuff tastes good and you can feed your whole family for under $10 bucks. They will argue up and down that the are providing a service and that if the consumer demands better food then they will provide it. Ha! That will be the day. Their response to this was offering salad. Those salads have more fat and sugar than some of their regular burger items.
