Been yearning for some BBQ? Then head on over to Quincy Street, just off of Bedford Avenue, and you will find the newest addition to the Bed-Stuy restaurant scene: Kings County BBQ.

Owner/Chef Chris McGee

Chris McGee is the chef/owner, and he and his wife Kate decided that they wanted to set up their business in the neighborhood where they lived. Their BBQ truck was stationed in Coney Island for the past summer season, but after Labor Day and with Astroland closing the business there was very slow. They’ve been in Brooklyn since 2001 and living on Quincy for the past two years. Even though they consider themselves proud Brooklynites, they are originally from Kansas City. They wanted to share that Kansas City barbeque tradition with their neighbors, so they cut their commute and set up shop on their own block.

Their Kings County BBQ truck opened for business on October 18 at 8:00 p.m.

The cuisine is real wood pit BBQ from a truck: that’s chicken, beef, and pork smoked low and slow (4-10 hours). The meats are marinated with their spice rub which is a blend of sweet, savory, and a little bit of fire and finished with their house sauce (a variation of Ollie Gates’ famous BBQ sauce which is tangy, slightly sweet and a tad hot).

I headed over after work yesterday to see Chris in action. He was definitely a one man BBQ show. He had a steady stream of customers, but he somehow managed to take orders and cook and pack orders. When it started to get cold and the wind started to pick up, he noticed that we were freezing so he gave us cups of warm apple cider while we were waiting for our orders. The warm cider really hit the spot!

I ordered a turkey burger and fries for myself and a hot dog and fries for my mom. Since the KC BBQ specialty is obviously BBQ, I couldn’t settle for just a turkey burger. I had to get the pulled pork so that my mother and I could do a taste test. As soon as I got home, I sampled the food. Overall it was very tasty–I think I’ll be grabbing a bite there again this week.

The truck is at 168 Quincy, between Bedford and Nostrand. They’re open Tuesday through Sunday noon – 10:00 p.m. (phone 347-881-6696). Right now they’re offering take out, but they expect to offer delivery soon. Seating will happen as the business grows. I encourage you to head over there and try the ‘que!

I’ll have to check it out. So glad to see a place that uses real wood, rather than just charcoal!

There are different places – states and cities around the country that are known for their BBQ and Kansas City is one of them. I learned my BBQ skills from my southern family roots. So, I’ll definitely have to do a taste test and try Kings County BBQ.

wow this is great… The area seems to be getting many new businesses which we really need. I am going to support this place like all the other businesses in BS. I really try to keep my dollar in this great community. I really hate spending my money even in other near by neighborhoods like Clinton Hill, Ft Greene or Park Slope but sometimes I am forced to shop in those places. I feel by doing this will attract more great places to Bedford Stuyvesant.

Wanted everyone to know that King’s County BBQ is up and running again. Chris had to shut down for a few weeks to get the larger truck ready for smokin. Stop by or give a call when you get a hankering for the ‘que.
