So it’s a Brand New Day! I’m so happy to see Obama win. I never thought I would see a black President of the United States, so I’ve spent the past couple of days in a state of shock.
I didn’t post immediately after Obama’s win because I was waiting for the election results in my home state of North Carolina. The reports from the Old North State were nothing but good news: they kicked Senator Liddy Dole (R) out and replaced her with Hagan (D), they have their first female governor in Beverly Perdue (D), and of course, the majority of North Carolina voters selected Barack Obama to be their president.
In the weeks leading up to the election, I’d been playing my favorite song from The Wiz, (and the best thing Luther Vandross has ever written) Brand New Day. I think I’m going to add this song to Alexa 11221′s election playlist. Click here to hear Brand New Day.

I know. What the heck is the world coming to? White people winning Soul Train awards ( Robin Thicke) and a Black man is President-Elect. As I phoned friends and family I sang Brand New Day to each and every one of them!
I think that may be the unofficial theme for his victory, the women from my Expecting Mommies group were playing this song also. Great minds think very much alike.
LOL Laila! It’s so funny that this is the music that we all thought about. For me, not only were the lyrics appropriate, but so too were the movie scenes that accompanied the song. Remember in the movie when the witch fell into the toilet and the workers in that dark scary factory started unzipping themselves and underneath their hideous exteriors were these gorgeous people? That’s exactly what Americans did on Nov. 4th!
I noticed that some people were playing Cooke’s I Was Born By The River after the election. I love that song, but that was the PRE-election theme, now that the change has come we’re supposed to be playing Brand New Day.
P.S. BSN–Congratulations! Ya’ll picked a great time to be expecting mommies!
Glad to see you voted the right way – but next time you vote Dem, do it on the Working Families Party line – it allows you to vote for the same candidates (Obama, etc.) but supports that political party, giving them more of a voice to push an excellent progressive agenda.
I think I’m a member of the Working Families Party, but I’m not sure. The reason for my confusion is that I was a member of the Green Party and then they disappeared (at least they did in NY) and then all of a sudden I started getting information in the mail about the Working Fam Party. Maybe I’m unaffiliated and they were sending me info so that I would join? In any case, their name has been something of a turnoff for me. As a single person without any kids, the WFP sounds like it’s a party that may not share my priorities. I say that without knowing much about them, though.
