New Bites: Roosters Chicken Rotisserie

By The Changeling | December 31, 2008

After sharing a taciturn, meatless holiday meal with my guests (Thanks, Ptomaine Tabernacle!), I thought that I should try to make it up to them after Christmas by getting them some meat. I wasn’t in the mood to cook, so I headed out in the direction of Choice Market, but before I got there I came upon Roosters Chicken Rotisserie on Lafayette. Here’s a little bit of information about the new place on the block:

Décor: The space is moderate-sized (it seems similar in size to Choice Market). They have a couple of those large communal tables for dining (just like Choice Market). Le coq figures prominently in the interior design.

Roosters are displayed on a shelf on the back wall and throughout the dining area.

The Cuisine: A few soups, salads and sandwiches as well as half, quarter and whole rotisserie chickens. Chickens come in plain, jerk, soy, lemon and cumin, and garlic and herb flavors. The chicken is hormone free, and they offer free-range chicken options as well. They have a catering menu and they deliver ($10 minimum).

        The Service: Quick and friendly

The Take Away: I purchased two half chickens (one with lemon and cumin, the other with jerk seasoning), a side of coleslaw and a side of potato salad. Overall the food was good, and my guests were happy. For those of you who adore all things spicy, you might find the jerk chicken too mild for your tastebuds, but it was nevertheless tasty. Although I thought that the sides would be slightly larger, I was pleased with my purchase and I will certainly be going back.

Roosters is cash only for now (I think they’ve only been open about two weeks), but they’ll be accepting credit cards in the near future.

Hey! Let’s hop into our magic time machine and travel way back to May 2008! Remember this place on the corner of Lafayette and Marcy? Alexa snapped this photo back in those olden days. This restaurant, called Chicken Chic, was supposed to be the NEXT BIG THING. Someone had cleaned up the storefront, painted the fence and even spruced up the back patio area. We all clung to visions of ourselves sitting out back and enjoying rotisserie chicken while listening to music emanating from Von King Park. Then spring turned into summer and then into autumn and then into winter while we sat around waiting for them to get their chic together and open up. Now here we are, a few hours from 2009, and this spot is still gathering cobwebs.

There should be a law—named in honor of this place—called the Chicken Chic Law: it is illegal to hang a business sign until the day before you’re going to open (soft openings don’t count—it needs to be the day before your Grand Opening). Whatevs, it’s their loss because when and if they do open they won’t be the only rotisserie game in town.

In the meantime, check out Roosters if you’re looking for some good food and you’re tired of eating things that are fried.

Every time I pass chicken chic on the B38 bus, I get so sad :-(

I thought the roosters place was like a crown fried chicken!

I know, you wouldn’t think that it was anything more than just another chicken place, but when I saw “Rotisserie” on the awning I knew that it was offering something a little different.

i’m glad you wrote about this place because a) i thought this place was old, and b) i thought it was just a random a** chicken spot, not “rotisserie” with free-range chicken! I think it’s the awning… looks rather cheesy.

I agree that the awning doesn’t do a good job of emphasizing Roosters’ uniqueness. I wish they had Chicken Chic’s design because it looks much better.

When I first moved here there was a pizza place (Romeo Pizza? Romero Pizza?) in the Roosters spot. I never saw that pizza place open though.

I ordered from here tonight and I can say this:

          1. the delivery was fast, 10-15 min (the spanish delivery guy was very nice - I actually feel bad because I only tipped 3 bucks, normally I think that’s fair but tonight it was really cold and he was on bicycle which I realized only too late)

          2. We ordered the plain chicken and the garlic and herb chicken combos. The plain chicken is just that - plain; it’s okay but nothing to write about.

The garlic and herb was excellent, juicy and flavorful. The chicken portions were nice and large. Half a chicken! The plain cost $5 and for the herb and garlic $5.75.

The combo’s include half a chicken with 1 side. $6.00 for plain chicken combo and $6.75 for the flavored chicken combo. The sides left us wanting, but considering they were only a dollar more, no complaints from us.

I would skip on the Spanish rice. It lacked salt and was far too peppered. It seemed to have been cooked in too much water because it’s consistency was slightly thick and mushy.

The Cole Slaw on the other hand was really good.

All in all, we’re ordering again soon.
Garlic and Herb chicken combo with a side of corn.
Lemon and Cumin with a side of Cole Slaw.

Is this place owned by the folks that have the red BBQ truck? I saw a red truck being spruced up in this backyard and thought it was going to be like a Habana Outpost deal…

Morgan, the next time I see Chris (he has a red BBQ truck) I’ll ask him about this.
