Congratulations are in order for the residents of Alice and Agate Courts! We’ve heard from a reliable source that the Alice and Agate Courts Historic District has been approved. An event to recognize the district is scheduled on February 10, 2009. (As soon as we get more information about this event we will post it here.) The residents of this little enclave off of Atlantic Avenue worked along with other members of the community to get landmark status for the area. Read more about this unique district by visiting the links below.
Next up for Bed-Stuy: the expansion of the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District and the formation of a new Bedford Corners District.

New Bed-Stuy Historic District in the Offing [Browntoner]

Do you know that Suy-Heights Historic District is expanding? I know it’s ben on the books since 1993, but basically ignored since. Any other info?
From what I can gather it’s been gaining some momentum recently. Whether it will happen before or after Bedford Corners, I’m not sure. I plan to keep in touch with someone who’s in the know and I promise to post any info. that I find out on the blog.
I am working with the BS Landmarking board and we are working on Bedford Corners and Stuyvesant Heights boundary extension as well others. Back in the 1990s someone dropped the ball with getting this done but today we have a great group of people working on getting this done.
I’m so glad to hear that. I’m in the process of purchasing on Bainbridge between Stuvesant Ave and Malcom X. I’d love to know if this block is in the extended area, though even if it’s not, any Landmarking will be a good thing. I can’t wait to hear more. Thank you.
I strongly believe that Landmarking has more positives than negatives. First it will stop people that don’t live in the community from coming in and building cheap out of place buildings in the middle of Victorian blocks. It will preserve the architecture of the neighborhood stop your neighbors from putting junk cars in the front area of there homes or painting there house hot purple and bringing your property value down. Help you get low interest loans from the city so when you decide renovate the facade of your house. It will save your house from a huge developers like Ratner. Also I think your block is up for Landmarking SuEl
forgive me, what area is bedford corners? how does a single block get landmark status? greene ave. between bedford + nostrand seems like one of the blocks in western bed stuy that should be landmarked. just turn the corner and look at the same block of lexington to see why.
Bedford Corners is the old name of the area. The original name is Bedford Village from the 1600s and 17000s. In the 1800s Bedford Corners was formed and is the area from Bedford to Tompkins bounded by Fulton and Putnam. So most Jefferson, Hancock, Halsey, Macon, Arlington and Verona will be landmark as Bedford Corners. In the late 1800s the area was also called Hancock Heights. Green Ave will be landmark but that is a future phase.
sadly, with the negative stigma the name bed-stuy carries, it really does help to rename as much of it as humanly possible.
I hate to say that your right T. AKA Ricky Raw. I have asked many people when you hear the name Bed-Stuy whats the first thing that comes to mind and about 9 out 10 people the first thing they say is crime followed by rap etc… Funny thing is that many say something different when I ask about Bedford Stuyvesant.. You might hear nice brownstone stones, black community etc etc.. When I tell people I live in Stuyvesant Heights I get “oh that’s the nice part of BedStuy”. To tell you the truth Bedford Stuyvesant has man “good parts” out side Stuyvesant Heights. I rarely tell people who live outside Bedford Stuyvesant I live in BedStuy. I always use the whole name Bedford Stuyvesant or Stuyvesant Heights.
the renaming discussion has come up before-i hear people referring to the area that borders clinton hill being called westbed a lot. bed stuy is too big and too varied to lump it all under one name, i believe. it has nothing to do with negative associations-it just makes it easier to understand what you’re talking about. imagine calling all of downtown manhattan “the village” or all of downtown brooklyn fort greene. it makes no sense.
Yeah, I’m going to start using these area names more frequently. If people need clarification, I’ll give it to them. I like WestBed because it’s easy to say.
What is the criteria for a block to become landmarked? I reside on Monroe, Nostrand and Marcy is this block considered Bed-Stuy or? I have read a lot about landmarking and how great it will be for the neighborhood and how changing the name will make it easier to get cab drivers to come to the area. But does changing the name really change the element? Will Landmarking remove the bad element? Believe me I am all for making the neighborhood better. I was born here and am raising my kids here – Bedstuy girl 4 life. How will Landmarking, name changing make things better for the existing residents, young and old. Please advise me of the next meeting I would really like to attend to get a better understanding. Currently a renter, block association president.
Tina you should go to the nyc.gov page they have landmarking section. Landmarking preserves the neighborhood and stops developers from putting out of scale ugly buildings in our community. I’m not sure about Monroe being landmarked.. Maybe a small section but not sure, I have to look the map.
