The murder rate for the city as a whole has dropped 23% this year in the first quarter, compared to last year at the same time. Yet crime rates are higher in Brooklyn, particularly in Bed-Stuy and adjacent areas, than elsewhere in New York. If you’re worried about crime and want to learn more about prevention efforts, come out to a Bed-Stuy Crime Prevention Workshop, featuring officers from local precincts.
Wednesday April 1, 7:00 pm
653 Putnam Avenue (between Lewis & Stuyvesant Aves.)
Invited guests:
81ST PRECINCT
Police Officer Manderson, Community Affairs
Police Officer Smith, Crime Prevention Officer
79th PRECINCT
Police Officer Saunder, Community Affairs
Police Officer McCloud, Crime Prevention Officer
We’ve organized this public safety forum for homeowners, renters, businesses, and all residents in general.
We’ll show you many ways to prevent crime and also what to do if you, your home, or business are victimized. The crime prevention and community affairs officers will be on hand to answers your questions.
For more information call: 917-586-7444.
(I’m not actually sure who the “we” above refers to–I got this info off an email on the Stuy-Heights Parents Group. But whoever you are, thank you for organizing this!)

On the subject of crime prevention, be on the look out for push in robbers. Tonight at around 9pm, someone rang my doorbell claiming to be from the “water department”. He said someone from the house next door called in a report of flooding coming from my basement. The house next door that this supposed call came from is abandoned so obviously, he was lying. He was clearly trying to gain entry to my house. When I asked for ID, he could not produce it and told me he had to go back to his truck and if I didn’t believe he was from the water department I could just look outside and see his truck. I didn’t open the door and told the guy to go away. Then I called police. The officers I spoke to at the 79th and 81st (I called both because I wasn’t sure which was my precinct) both say this is not unusual. Be careful folks.
Go to the front window and look out first its safer also you can see if any one else is out there with the person who may be trying to gain entry to you house.
The scam artists in theses economic trying times are going to be on the rise so we must be very careful.
Smart on your part to ask for id first
This happens quite regularly, with men posing to be city officials investigating tenant complaints, utility workers, etc.
What irks me more is that when you call the precints, they say, yeah, we know about it. And that’s all my mother and I have gotten when we’ve called. WTF.
More effort needs to be made to deal with this.
