Bob Guskind, 1958-2009

By now many of you have already heard that Robert Guskind, former writer for Curbed and the blogger behind the wonderful Gowanus Lounge passed away on Wednesday. Bob was the first blogger to welcome me into the blogosphere. Soon after I wrote my first post, I emailed him and told him how much I liked the Gowanus Lounge and that I was trying to start a small blog for Bed-Stuy. He immediately put up a post telling his readers to check out this blog. It was such a thoughtful gesture on his part.

I’d see him at blogger events and when the topic of place blogs in Brooklyn would come up, he would always mention the importance of including everyone in the conversation. He believed that there were still many neighborhoods in Brooklyn that were “underblogged,” and that the population of place bloggers should be more diverse (racially and in terms of the number of years in the neighborhood–most place bloggers in Brooklyn are white and are new residents in their ‘hood). I truly appreciate Bob for encouraging everyone to have a voice in the Brooklyn blogging community.

His voice will be missed.

That is such sad news. I loved Gowanus Lounge. Bob clearly loved Brooklyn and had a huge interest in preserving that which makes it so special. He will be missed.
