Le Sucre Coffee and Jazz Lounge opened earlier this year, but it took me awhile drop by this cozy spot on Dekalb just off of Bedford Avenue. On the day I visited, both owners, Max and Jean, were there.
Once inside you’re immediately greeted by a mural of Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. Now everyone knows that Sonny Rollins is a thousand times better than Bird, but I told Max that I wouldn’t hold it against him. Â It’s a gorgeous mural. Â I forgot to ask who the artist was. I guess I’ll ask the next time I drop by.
The place was filled with art when I visited. Â They were preparing for an art show.
This is a view of the back room and the backyard.
Roses from the nearby church grow over the fence and into Le Sucre’s backyard.
There’s plenty of seating out back. Â Max said that they do BBQs on Sunday afternoons and they’re hoping to start a tapas menu soon.
IÂ had originally ordered a sandwich that they didn’t have, but Fredricka, the woman who was preparing the food that day, suggested that I try a favorite–the curry chicken panini. Â They have a several sandwiches and salads–your standard cafe fare. I purchased the panini and a slice of carrot cake for ten bucks. Â Both were delicious. I’ll definitely be back.

Place looks very nice. Really like the mural, it’s wonderful.
The food sounds tasty, curry chicken (panini) with carrot cake, let me take a wild guess – the cook is from the carribean (Jamaica?).
Only one insignificant, teeny-weeny issue: TEN DOLLARS! For one panini and one piece of cake! No bottle of ginger beer, sorrel, or peanut punch! What is the price on the panini, and what is the size? Don’t tell me the slice of carrot cake was five dollars. Suppose a husband and wife brings their two children, and order the “meal” you purchased – forty dollars. I hope they have money on their metrocard, or they may be striding along Bedford.
Not sure about the cook, but the two owners, Max and Jean, are Haitian, so that explains the island influenced menu.
And about the price–the cake was between $2-$3 for a slice. It was a large slice, though, so it could probably be shared between 2 people. The panini was about $7, I believe. In any case, my total was definitely $10. Most of the sandwiches I looked at were around 6 or 7 bucks, so I think your average lunch meal here would be about ten bucks. I see where you’re coming from with the comment about the cost for a family, but honestly, I don’t know how families (especially those with more than 1 kid) manage to afford anything in this city outside of the free events.
My two (2) nephews arrived in NYC last Summer to visit their Father. While he worked I took them out – very intelligent children. I took them to The Museum of Natural History (on a weekday) and a movie theatre in times square. The Museum was about $40 a head – even for the 8 yr. old children. It was an amazing visit, but I also had to get them lunch (pizza).
Another day I took them to my “work site”, and we then walked across the Brooklyn Bridge. We visited the Park below, and then went to the Brooklyn Prommenad (?). This was a lot cheaper, and they still had a great time.
Regarding Max & Jean, I should have picked up the nationality in the name “Jean”. My bag. I only remembered “Max”. In any event, given the curry chicken I still say their Family extends to Jamaica. Haiti was the first island to gain freedom from the Europeans. Either shortly before, or shortly after, people from Jamaica “escaped” to Haiti to obtain what we are all born into – freedom.

The mural is amazing! You are extremely talented, MM!
I’ll have to think about which drummer deserves a spot on one of the walls.
