Wildflower Spotting

Coreopsis that I (or my seed-bombing partner) planted in a vacant lot.

I spent this month looking for wildflowers in the area that I seed-bombed during the Bed-Stuy Meadow project. I’ve seen a few flowers here and there–not quite the burst of color that I was hoping for–but I’m still keeping an eye on my [...]

Bed-Stuy Will Soon Go Into Therapy

No, I’m not predicting that us Bed-Stuy residents will need to see a psychotherapist en masse.   Maybe we’ll all go together to Therapy Wine Bar (364 Lewis Avenue, between Halsey and Macon Streets).  This soon-to-be bar has been in the works since January.  Located across the street from the Brooklyn Public Library, the front is [...]

Come Support the Malcolm X Community Market!!!

On Saturday while I was at the market, we got word that Migliorelli Farms, the sole farmer’s vendor at the market at this time, will not be back after this coming Saturday, as the sales at the market have not been enough to cover their expenses (labor and gas) in coming out to the market. [...]

This Saturday, August 1st, the Macon Library will hold a screening of James Baldwin: The Price of the Ticket [87 minutes - 1990].

The Price of the Ticket uses striking archival footage to evoke the atmosphere of Baldwin’s formative years – the Harlem of the 30s and his father’s fundamentalist church. Newsreel clips from the ’60′s [...]

Save Bed-Stuy Farm

From the Brooklyn Rescue Mission’s letter to elected officials:
Grocery shopping in Bedford-Stuyvesant can be a real challenge. Fast food joints abound, but if you want fresh vegetables and fruits you have to take the subway or bus to other neighborhoods. If you’re an elder or sick, the trip might be more than you can do. [...]

Hattie Carthan Farmer’s Market

This past weekend I visited the third of Bed-Stuy’s new farmer’s markets, the Hattie Carthan Farmer’s Market adjacent to the Hattie Carthan Community Garden (Clifton Place just west of Marcy Ave).
Yes, it's true. I am a fan of the handpainted farmer's market signs.
First, let me express my love for the Hattie Carthan Community Garden. It’s [...]

Solomon’s Porch Closed?!

I became suspect last week when Solomon’s Porch (307 Stuyvesant Avenue) was closed on a weeknight.  Then a couple of days later, their signature outdoor furniture was removed.  Upon further investigation, what I thought was an event flyer was actually a closing notice from the Department of Health, dated June 11th.

However, a greeting on their MySpace page [...]
