New Habitat for Humanity Homes Coming to Bed-Stuy

Renderings for the Hart St. and Lafayette Avenue homes.

Habitat for Humanity will be building new homes in Bed-Stuy soon. If you are interested in becoming a homeowner, then you should visit the Habitat for Humanity website for information on this affordable housing opportunity.

Sixteen families will help build their future homes in these four row houses, which will include a mix of two- and three-bedroom condominiums. These developments will be located at 512, 514 and 544 Lafayette Avenue (between Bedford and Nostrand) and 118 Hart Street (between Marcy and Tompkins). The homes on the Hart site, which is currently a vacant lot, will be constructed first. These “green” buildings will include high efficiency boilers, energy-efficient, low-emissivity windows, non-toxic construction materials and many more eco-friendly alternatives. Construction begins this summer, with volunteers joining in the winter of 2010. The projected completion is spring of 2011.

    1. Habitat for Humanity is one of those extraordinary organizations that has embraced the essential purpose that housing performs in our society: Stable Communities.

It’s amazing that of all the developers New York City gets into bed with, this not for profit organization has gotten the least support from elected officials in Brooklyn.

In fact, while there may be more in the burough, I’m only familiar with one development they were involved in building in Brooklyn: Corner of Halsey St and Marcus Garvey Blvd in Bed Stuy.

    2. Habitat for Humanity has been able to stand on their own feet thankfully. They are one of the organizations in Newburgh that actually get done what they promise

I’m a fan of Habitat as well. The building on Halsey and Marcus Garvey is really nice looking. I wish that they were given all of the vacant lots in the area so that they could turn them into decent looking, affordable housing. They produce the type of affordable housing that I can support–the kind that focuses on homeOWNERSHIP.
