New Trees on Myrtle

When I read that that Mayor Bloomberg was setting the ambitious goal of planting a million trees in NYC, I thought, “Yeah, right. He won’t be able to plant 10 trees without folks complaining about it and trying to shut it down.” Well, luckily I was wrong. The MillionTreesNYC initiative is a success! So far they’ve planted over a quarter of a million trees in the five boroughs. Our stretch of Myrtle Avenue is already looking much better thanks to this program. So far I’ve spotted new Dawn Redwoods, Honey Locusts, English Oaks and Pin Oaks on Myrtle east of Classon. Soon after I took these photos the trees were suited up with Tree Gators. Hopefully Myrtle will become a beautiful tree-lined avenue in the future. Anyone else get new street trees in their area?

that’s awesome news! they look great. did you know that you can ADOPT a street tree? i’m already a proud pappa to three youngins (a shubert cherry, a honey locust and a littleleaf linden). if you go to the milliontreesnyc stewardship page, you can find out how to become a young tree steward and how to take care of it.

We got a tree in front of our house on Pulaski by Marcy. When I originally asked neighbors what they thought about having trees on our block, most people said they didn’t want to have to clean up after them and would prefer not to have trees planted. I think the tree in front of our house looks great though, and is worth having. Hopefully the neighbors will come around?

We’re at Putnam near Patchen and have been trying for like 2 years to get a tree from Million Trees. Nothing doing yet, so we just put a little evergreen in a barrel out front!

I like your DIY spirit. I’m surprised it would take 2 years to get a tree. Let us know if the Million Trees people ever show up.
