I just received this information from the folks at the Brooklyn Public Library:

Macon Library (361 Lewis Avenue) was built in the early 20th century. In an effort to restore this land marked Carnegie library to its original grandeur and detailing, it will temporarily close at 6 PM on Friday, November 13 and reopen at 10 AM on Monday, December 14.

During this one month closure Macon will undergo preliminary upgrades including window replacement, exterior rehabilitation, installation of exterior lights and front fence repairs. Macon will close again in Spring 2010 to finalize these renovations.

While renovations continue, BPL will offer bookmobile service at Macon Library, Tuesdays, 11 AM – 4 PM and Thursdays , 1 PM – 6 PM. In addition, our full catalog, along with hundreds of eBooks, articles and databases, can be accessed 24 hours, seven days a week from a home computer or another remote location using a BPL library card. Several nearby BPL branches, including Saratoga and Marcy libraries, are also open and ready to meet your needs.

Visit www.brooklynpubliclibrary.org for more information on Macon and our other 59 locations in Brooklyn.

I find this to be pretty strange. The library was recently closed for over 2 years. Now they need to close for another month. The library is certainly cute, but it doesn’t carry many books and its hours are horrendous.

I too find it strange that the library is closing. I figured that after that last long closure this wouldn’t happen again.

It does seem annoying that they can’t keep this library open and that it doesn’t seem to have many books. I know it’s a small branch, but even the other small Carnegie ones (like the ones in Park Slope or Carroll Gardens) seem as though they are PACKED with books.
