House of Art Gallery in conjunction with the Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium presents an evening of live jazz performed by Tulivu (vocals), Ayodele Maakheru (guitar) and Oisze (poetry). This exciting event takes place on Thursday, April 22, 2010 at House of Art Gallery. Space is limited so purchase your tickets in advance.
Here’s a little information about the performers:
Tulivu is the daughter of the great baritone saxophonist, Harold Cumberbatch. She has performed in the Caribbean, Europe , Russia, Japan and West Africa in Ghana. Tulivu has worked with Hannibal Lokumbe, The Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, the Kronos Quartet, John Hicks and Romero Lubambo to name a few. Ayodele is an international performing artist, bandleader and composer who has appeared in the orchestras of several Broadway plays including “The Wiz”, “The Color Purple”, “Black and Blue” and “Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk” to name a few. He has performed with Gregory Hines, Angela Bofil, The New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Lester Bowie, Lionel Hampton and many other luminaries. Oisze, pronounced(Ah-see) means “a love poem”. She believes poetry is her conduit through which she is to spread the message of love, peace, harmony and understanding. She contends “Everyone has a calling and I believe that God has called me to speak a poetic word in and out of season; I am humbled I can only hope that my words connect with a hue=man spirit on a positive note, thus honoring Him who sent me.”
The Central Brooklyn Jazz Consortium (CBJC)
CBJC is an organization of venues and individuals committed to the development and preservation of Jazz and related art forms throughout the Borough of Brooklyn. Organized in 1999, the Consortium is the realization of years of discussions between representatives of Jazpazaz Preservation Society (Ms Alma Carroll), Jazz 966 (Torrie McCartney), Sistas’ Place (Viola Plummer), and SoFocus (Deacon Leroy Applin) on the importance and need for such a body.
