A New Italian Restaurant Coming to Stuyvesant Avenue???

Rumor has it that a gourmet Italian restaurant is going to open on the corner of Stuyvesant Avenue and Macon Street, what used to be Butternut Market’s tentative spot.  Another source says the owner of Saraghina is looking to open a spin-off restaurant.  Does anyone know if this is true?

Very happy that Bed-Stuy has a blog. Would rather have a consumer watch agency in that spot. Groceries stores are running amok in selling some items that would not be in other communities. How do we get a consumer watch going?

I did read the saraghina rumor on New York Magazine’s Grub Street web site – http://newyork.grubstreet.com/2010/01/learn_bee-keeping_saraghina_ex.html.

I keep on hearing that it will be on Halsey across the street from where Butternut Market is supposed to open. No idea if that’s true.

    correct info– Maconstreetman…

Also, heard from a second source that Brooklynite Gallery on Malcolm X is relocating out of Bed-Stuy.

  5. The Progressive Southside says:

thanks maconstreetman. both sources has left me wanting to know more, so i guess i’m going to have to investigate. btw, i’m wondering if “across the street” would mean that the bodega will go away OR if it’s the storefront space next door, right where the eastbound halsey street bus stop is located.

  6. MaconStreetMan says:

I have assume it was the place behind the bodega. Do bodegas ever go out of business in Bed-Stuy?

I have also wondered what’s going on on Lewis Avenue. Is that flower shop out of business? Spring seems like a good time to sell plants, but it’s never open. I also noticed that Craig Samuel (the co-owner of Peaches, etc.) bought 368 Lewis Avenue (the place taht was supposed to becoem stizzy’s) in November 2009. Finally, I really like Brooklynite Gallery. It would be sad if they left. If that is true, hopefully, their renovated storefront would be used for something cool. The owners of the gallery own the building I believe.

Yes, this will be an Italian restaurant. The owner will do an incredible job with it. I know his work first hand.

The new restaurant from the Saraghina people will be in the space behind the bodega. Unfortunately the bodega will remain another few years

    A consumer watch agency???? ROTFLMMFAO

I’m glad to see this retail location being replaced by another restaurant. Italian cuisine comes to bed stuy. Don’t be surprised if the featured entrees included collard greens…you know, a fusion effect.

  10. Vettievette says:

I heard that they (Saraghina owners) were planning to make it like a seafood place w/ an Italian twist. I’m all for it. Also, over on Tompkins, Sebastian (chef/owner) of La Table Exquise told me that he is planning to have outdoor seating, longer hours, and a brunch menu during the warmer months.

I also finally got to Peaches Hot House on friday (Tompkins at Hancock). Food was really good.

Yes, the owner of Saraghina is planning to open a second restaurant in Bed Stuy. It will serve fish. Last winter, he said he was planning to open it this spring.

  14. Sarah says:

I know it’s completely out of subject but anyone knows when the farmer market on Fulton and Malcom X will re open? Its’ already spring and it was so nice to have some fresh veggies in the neighborhood.

  15. Sarah says:

this was in thre NY mag tonight:”Bedford-Stuyvesant: David Seatts, the owner of Tavern on Nostrand, may bring a gourmet Italian restaurant to the currently vacant building at the corner of Stuyvesant Avenue and Macon Street.”

  16. @Sarah – Malcolm X Farmer’s Market will open in July and run through November.

I’ll believe all of the above when i see it ,all of these rumored openings are akin to tabloids magazines that I can purchase from foodtown. I have walked by the spot on Lewis for over two years and have seen no construction only a Butternut market sign which is no longer there, I guess that is because they are moving to the now defunct Solomon’s Porch. I guess placing signage in front of a place constitutes a new business , what a joke. To sum it up we aren’t building condos or residential properties here it shouldn’t take this long to at the very least break ground

  18. HopefulInBedStuy says:

I’m with Merak – is this really going to happen? It would be great for the nabe.

But according to DOB there is a stop work order on this place that has been in effect since 2007. It looks like it is still in effect cause there is a big red bold note on the DOB website that say “STOP WORK ORDER EXISTS ON THIS PROPERTY”. And there is some complaint about the stability of the building. Has anyone actually seen work going on or are we just getting our hopes up?
