Happy 3rd Anniversary Oz Hardware!

Any business in Bed-Stuy who provides quality necessities AND is able to withstand a shaky economy deserves applause. This month, Oz Hardware & Home (307 Malcolm X Boulevard, between Bainbridge and Decatur Streets) celebrates three years in business.  There doesn’t appear to be another hardware store on the Malcolm X strip in competition.

Oz Hardware actually started out one block north at 302 Malcolm X. Just a year ago, they moved to their present location.  Co-owner Desmond Prince reflected on moving from a 330 square foot storefront to a larger 800 square foot space.  One would think the clientele they developed at the old location would follow them one block south to the new location.  ”We lost most of them!  It’s like we had to start all over again.”  Back then, he said they would sell small hardware items along with green products and candles.  ”We’re more visible here.  Down there, we were considered to be a cute concept boutique hardware.  Now, we’re more hardcore hardware!”

And hardcore hardware they are.  They sell Pittsburgh brand paints – no ones sells this brand within a six mile radius, according to Desmond.  There’s a section dedicated to electrical supplies and even to gardening.

Desmond also recalls when their store felt the effects of a struggling economy.  He told his business partner Rodney Hughes not too long ago that he believed there will be a shift for the better.  He was right and their store has been doing better ever since.  Happy anniversary Oz Hardware and we hope you’ll be around in the years to come.

It looks like they are still doing some work to it, but almost there.

Really nice people that own the place but never have what I am looking for or make an effort to get it. They need to keep a list of what people are asking for. Really hope they make it and their new project takes off too.

Oz hardware provides a great convenience and when they do not have an item, the owners have always offered to order it for me. Very service oriented in my own experience. Looking forward to their new project!
