Happy 3rd Anniversary Oz Hardware!

Any business in Bed-Stuy who provides quality necessities AND is able to withstand a shaky economy deserves applause. This month, Oz Hardware & Home (307 Malcolm X Boulevard, between Bainbridge and Decatur Streets) celebrates three years in business.  There doesn’t appear to be another hardware store on the Malcolm X strip in competition.

Street Scene April 2010

[ April 18, 2010; 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. ]

Talk about urban farmsteads–I was walking down Lafayette Ave. behind a man and his toddler daughter when I heard the little girl exclaim, excitedly, “Chickens!” And sure enough, there is a coop full of clucking hens in a corner of the Hattie Carthen Community Garden. What’s the Name of This Place? For Now, Call It CLOSED!

This rotating foodie place located at 212 Patchen Avenue (between Macon and MacDonough Streets) has had several names within a short period of time.  When I first covered the opening of this restaurant, it was the Brownstoner’s Cafe. Only two short weeks prior, it was called Orchid Cafe.  Right before that, it was called Want’z Pizza.  Man!  According to this [...]

A New Italian Restaurant Coming to Stuyvesant Avenue???

Rumor has it that a gourmet Italian restaurant is going to open on the corner of Stuyvesant Avenue and Macon Street, what used to be Butternut Market’s tentative spot.  Another source says the owner of Saraghina is looking to open a spin-off restaurant.  Does anyone know if this is true?
