Mixing Styles on Myrtle

I know this is just beyond the borders of Bed-Stuy (it’s just a few blocks into Clinton Hill), but I just had to take a photo of the building addition on Myrtle between Ryerson and Grand. It’s a real sight to see. It looks like a new building is sneaking up behind an old building in the hopes of scaring it. You almost expect the new building to shout “Boo! I gotcha!” I must say that I, for one, am certainly shaken.

WNYC recently came up with a list of the 10 ugliest buildings in New York City. Our very own Woodhull Hospital made the list (and rightly so), but WNYC lists the hospital as being located in Bushwick. OK by me! Bushwick can have it! Hopefully WNYC will consider making a list of the 10 ugliest building additions.

I have not seen this monstosity with my own two eyes yet but can you confirm what exactly is going on here? Is that, in fact, a brick apartment building with a fugly generic “modern” addition sitting right on top of it? WHY???????

There’s no need for such fugly development. If you walk down some streets in Fort Greene, like Cumberland near the park, you will see recent additions to the neighborhood that tastefully blend in with the stately brownstones that have lined the street for years. oO course none of them look like this generic faux modern schlock that seems to be on every former vacant lot in Clinton Hill and Bed-Stuy….

When I first saw it, I couldn’t believe what I was seeing and I couldn’t understand why someone would do this. If I can find out any information about this thing, I’ll definitely post it. There is no reason why they couldn’t have just made the top couple of floors look like the rest of the building. And the irony of this structure being just a hop and a skip away from Pratt is not lost on me.
