Mixing Styles on Myrtle

I know this is just beyond the borders of Bed-Stuy (it’s just a few blocks into Clinton Hill), but I just had to take a photo of the building addition on Myrtle between Ryerson and Grand. It’s a real sight to see. It looks like a new building is sneaking up behind an old [...]

What’s Your Stoop Story?

I love Brooklyn stoop culture.
I didn’t grow up in the city, so I didn’t sit out on the stoop as a kid. (We had a porch, but I was generally encouraged pack my business up and take it into the fenced in backyard.) In fact, my only experience of the brownstone stoop as a [...]

The new kosher grocery store located on the corner of Myrtle and Spencer finally has a name! It’s going to be called Chestnut Supermarket and it looks like it will be opening very soon. Question: what’s with all the new Bed-Stuy markets having “nut” in the name. Butternut, Chestnut… I guess two [...]

Billboards Down

Odd seeing two familiar billboards down yesterday evening at the intersection of Lewis and Jefferson Avenues.  One is usually positioned on the side of Betty Brite Dry Cleaners.  The other is located across the street from Betty Brite’s entrance, on the side of the corner deli and grocery bodega.  It’s not common for billboards to [...]

A Sign Appears at Tin City Drug & General Store

It’s official.  A printed sign appeared in the storefront window yesterday – a hint of vintage black type on white.  We learned from Saratu Nafziger about the business when we inquired about the renovations a couple of weeks ago.  Saratu says “it will carry body and personal care products, over-the-counter drugs, cosmetics, eco-friendly household supplies, [...]

UPDATE: Commercial Property at 480 Halsey Street

Last month, we inquired about this commercial space at 480 Halsey Street (at Lewis Avenue), which was available for some time.   Is it possible this is now rented?  A week ago, the security shutters were up and workers were feverishly clearing out the main floor and storing items in the basement.   I was [...]
