The Country Kitchen is located in southeastern Bedford-Stuyvesant and touts itself as the best southern cuisine in NYC. They’ve been around for twenty-five years, originally run by the Lee family. The restaurant has been under new management for the last six years, and new owner Paul Royal has made some welcome changes. In addition to the “take-out”, there is now a beautiful sit down dining room seating up to thirty, which is the platform for their Friday night karaoke and also used for parties. He has also added many more southern favorites to the menu as requested by his customers. The restaurant was formerly known as “Carolina Country Kitchen” and in addition to the restaurant, carried a variety of grocery items from the old North State. There is no longer a grocery store, however items such as chopped BBQ, country ham and chitterlings are brought in from North Carolina weekly.
In their words:
“Our menu has offered every traditional soul food dish your appetite desires starting with our mouthwatering array of of chicken dishes–including fried, baked, BBQ’d and smothered–right to our braised oxtails and beef short ribs, turkey wings, pork babyback and regular ribs. You can also enjoy sitdown dining on Sundays with a menu that includes specialties such as broiled or smothered sirloin steaks, salmon and catfish.”
They also have an extensive vegetarian and low cal menu (which is a real rarity among authentic southern/soul food restaurants), and they offer catering.
Online reviews of the Country Kitchen are quite positive. One review said, “Go for the smothered pork chops or the fried chicken” and another said “I enjoyed every part of this dining experience.”
Have any of you visited this place? How’d you like it? I have to say that the BBQ chicken is making my mouth water!

I’ve probably stopped in at the Country Kitchen twice over the past four-five years. I would go more if the location wasn’t a bit out of the way. Each time I went, the food was delicious and the take out line was long.
I remember passing by it one time on my way from the airport, and that’s when I realized how far it was from where I lived. I’m still going to try to make an effort to get over there, though. A long take out line is a good sign!
The Country Kitchen is a large part of my childhood. My Dad (who is from NC) used to drive all the way over there on the weekends and we would get breakfast (Delicious cheese grits, scrambled eggs, bacon and sausage!). I am so overjoyed to hear that they are still in business (I had heard rumors of their closing a few years ago!) and I will definitely have to go back on Sunday and get breakfast!
They did close the larger enterprise which was like a soul food mickey d but the food was great then and its still great now
“which was like a soul food mickey d”
LOL! Like McDowalls?
Lol i meant on the scale of size it was huge do not remember how many it seated and from the outside was made to look like a large farm house
I was there last night for the “sunday feast”..i had smothered turkey wings yams and collards..and my husband had the bbq beef short ribs mac n cheese and fresh string beans…all i can say is mmmmmmmmm…good..and the peach cobbler was actually hot and the crust was on point…love that place!!
